London, England, 11th November, 2003 – AnalySoft announces Adaptive Analytic Warehouse for Microsoft Business Solutions-Navision®.
Excel-based self-service reporting and analytics solution for end-users promises to take IT out of the management reporting business at long last.
AnalySoft Development Ltd today announces the immediate availability of AnalyServer 1.0 which provides an out-of-the-box adaptive data warehouse and business analytics solution for users of Microsoft Business Solutions ERP applications. Designed to be installed by Microsoft Certified Business Solutions Partners without specialist data warehousing (DW) or business intelligence (BI) skills, AnalyServer helps to fulfil the promise of Microsoft SQL Server business intelligence capabilities to Microsoft Business Solutions mid-market ERP users.
AnalyServer 1.0 includes an AnalyServer Adaptor for Navision supporting both SQL and native database versions of Microsoft Business Solutions-Navision 2.01 and later (formerly known as Navision Financials), through to Navision 3.01 to 3.7 (formerly Navision Attain). The AnalyServer Adaptor contains database mappings for the core Navision database schema for each supported Navision version plus logic to extract meta-data for any customisations applied by customers or their certified partners. AnalyServer automatically adapts its analytic data warehouse reference model to reflect customisations found in the source ERP database. AnalyServer Adaptors for Microsoft Business Solutions-Great Plains® and Axapta® are currently under development.
AnalyServer leverages the full power of Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and the Analysis Services on-line analytic processing (OLAP) server. Uniquely AnalyServer provides powerful cross-ledger analysis by consolidating all ledger transactions into a single multidimensional data warehouse model before summarising them into a server-based OLAP hyper-cube of over 20 dimensions. This provides unlimited navigation of the entire data set extracted from the ERP system without the user needing to know from which ledger, or combination of ledgers, the data was extracted.
Until now reporting and analytic solutions for the mid-market have been based on a number of less sophisticated architectures. Firstly report-writers or spreadsheet add-ins which access multiple ledgers in the live ERP system. Secondly cube-on-query tools, in which OLAP cubes are generated on demand as a result of a single ERP query. Thirdly multi-data mart/cube models which create stove-pipes from each ERP ledger, such as the GL, Sales Ledger, Item Ledgers etc., sometimes numbering 20 or more such data marts/cubes. All of these alternatives have advantages over each other but also suffer significant drawbacks in terms of ease of use, consistency, information quality and flexibility as well as a potentially devastating impact on ERP system performance.
AnalySoft founder and CEO, Dr Nigel Geary, said: ‘Giving users direct access to your live ERP database for any sort of queries which require cross-ledger joins will always end in tears. ERP systems were designed and tuned for transaction processing, not analytics, and can be brought to their knees by the ‘query-from-hell’ which can seem quite a reasonable request to the naïve end-user. An analytic data warehouse protects your ERP system performance by joining all the ledgers within the data warehouse server during scheduled loads – typically overnight – and shifting the query, reporting and analytic processing on to a dedicated, low-cost PC Server.’
AnalyServer 1.0 includes a powerful Microsoft Excel add-in, an OEM version of XLCubed, which provides outstanding flexibility enabling end-users with moderate Excel skills to instantly create highly formatted management reports for publishing/distribution. In addition it turns Excel into an interactive smart-client for ad hoc analytical tasks. These might include break-out analysis, as in customer/product ranking, and drill-through to transaction level detail, held in the AnalyServer warehouse, without having to ‘drill-back’ into the live ERP ledgers. AnalyServer is also compatible with most client OLAP tools for Microsoft Analysis Services such as Excel Pivot Tables, Microsoft Data Analyzer, ProClarity, Cognos PowerPlay and Panorama, as well as SQL query and reporting tools like Microsoft’s up-coming SQL Server Reporting Services.
However Geary continues: ‘Excel is the accountants’ workhorse. Give them a query or OLAP tool and they will just dump the data into Excel at the first opportunity. With the AnalyServer/XLCubed combination end-users not only cut out an unnecessary step using an unfamiliar tool but they can also eliminate 90% of the data massaging and spreadsheet linking that is so time consuming and brittle. Now Excel-based management reports take minutes to build and are easy to share and maintain. That’s our ROI right there - before we even try to measure the benefit of having better business insight and agility.’
The Computing Practice Ltd (TCP) is a Microsoft Certified Business Solutions partner in Northampton, England, and is also an AnalySoft partner. Keith Dunkinson, Managing Director of TCP, commented: 'AnalyServer gives our Microsoft Navision customers a better solution allowing us to deliver functionality and flexibility which we would find very difficult to provide using the standard tools. We don't want to become specialists in data warehousing and OLAP so having a product like AnalyServer built by the experts at AnalySoft has added considerable value to our business and helps satisfy a real customer need.'
AnalyServer 1.0 has been verified for Windows Server 2003 and is bundled with a runtime SQL Server license under a Microsoft Product Integration Program agreement. Visit http://www.analysoft.com/info.htm to request product information and/or sign up for the company newsletters.
