Brand Communications helps connect Rail Passengers to the internet using Wi-Fi in a fast, seamless and reliable way.
HUNTINGDON - 1st December 2003 - UK Based, Mobile Data and Remote Access Specialists, Brand Communications Limited, today announced that they will be working with Nomad Digital and UK Train companies to provide high-speed Internet access to train passengers using hotspots and wireless LAN technology.
This Wi-Fi solution will maintain a reliable and seamless mobile connection throughout the whole journey, allowing the travelling businessperson access to their LAN, email or internet on rail journeys. Trials have already taken place on tracks both in England and Scotland with staggering results. The latest trials were held on route between Edinburgh and London Kings Cross and achieved realistic data rates and speeds, with over 18 GigaBytes of data being sent to and from the train.
The System works by flooding rail carriages with a wireless signal that allows passengers to connect to the Internet via a control unit located on the train. Passengers can use any laptop or PDA fitted with a standard Wi-Fi adapter.
Key to the operation of the system is the communications engine developed by Brand Communications. The system automatically manages data devices and aggregated bandwidth from whatever is available to it along a given route. The system can be sending data down all the public operator networks, switched and packet at the same time and will automatically bring on-line high speed Microwave, PWLAN or Satellite as they come into range. The system continually monitors the performance and integrity of each data pipe to ensure that optimal use is made of it. The system can provide seamless roaming across all the bearers or aggregate them as required to achieve a high-speed service, ensuring continuity of connection with the end user having to re-start their Internet session. The system has also been fully tested with 3G handsets and technology and the train solution will incorporate this as it becomes generally available.
If the signal is lost, for instance during travel through a tunnel, the control unit will recover the internet connection when the train has regained a signal, buffering data so that users do not have to re-connect to the internet.
The solution also includes a Web Optimiser engine developed by Brand Communications that ensures that heavy graphics are optimised for un-wired connections, reducing the size of web site downloads and so enhancing the user experience.
Brand Communications were one of the first companies ever to run managed Internet access on trains in 1996, when they provided a service along with BTCellnet (O2), which delivered email and Internet access to first class passengers on the London to Manchester route with Richard Branson's Virgin Trains.
Martin Kendrick, Brand Communications Managing Director, comments, "Business commuters are increasingly demanding the need for access to wireless services during their journeys to be able to keep in touch and access real time data whilst on the move. Brand's technology and partnership with Nomad Digital now allows Train Companies to offer these types of services to their customers.
"Reliability is key to any mobile data service and Brand's technology ensures the user has a true reliable connection from start to finish" added Kendrick.
Brand's Apollo 'Anywhere' solution makes mobile data a reality for business-critical data applications using Session Management. It removes the uncertainty of using a wireless network to transfer vital information by transparently integrating GSM, GPRS and 802.11b networking with LAN environments, both within the enterprise and in the field and provides automatic recovery from dropped connections without repeating and data transaction.
