Unwanted email (commonly known as spam) is on the increase according to BlackSpider Technologies.

In 2003 BlackSpider saw a massive 42% increase in the quantity of spam being blocked compared to 2002, and at the current growth rate this will be significantly more in 2004. Many companies are finding that over 50% of their inbound mail is spam and BlackSpider estimate that this figure will be closer to 70% by the end of 2004. Virus volumes were up over 300% year on year largely due to the Sobig.F and Swen outbreaks.

“2003 has seen the start of a tidal wave of spam which is only likely to increase throughout 2004” stated John Cheney, managing director, BlackSpider. “Companies need to be one step ahead of the spammers, and this means being clever and educating users about how they distribute their email address, as well as deploying technology which can filter out this unwanted nuisance before it hits a corporate network.”

Cheney continued “Spam and viruses cost organisations a huge quantity of resource in terms of time and money and we need to work together as vendors, users and legislators to try and combat this rising epidemic so that 2004 doesn’t become the year of the spammer.”
