Simulation software developed by Tecnomatix Technologies Ltd is being used to support the development of new equipment control and fleet management systems at the Europe Container Terminal (ECT). Serving the port of Rotterdam, these facilities are claimed to be Europe’s largest transportation hub of its kind. The systems are being developed by Gottwald Port Technology, Düsseldorf/Germany, for implementation within the ECT infrastructure.

Tecnomatix is working with Navis LCC, a global leader in resource optimisation technology for the transportation and logistics industries, and TBA Nederland, a Tecnomatix partner and logistics specialist, contracted by Gottwald Port Technology.

The simulation represents the control software – developed by Gottwald Port Technology – to operate the fleet of automatic guided vehicles (AGVs) and rail mounted gantry (RMG) harbour cranes. Computer modeling enables the functionality and performance of the Navis high level control software to be tested under various operational scenarios.

Advanced testing allows problems to be resolved before the software is installed, thereby reducing risk and the time required for commissioning the actual facilities on-site. Underlining the importance for Navis and ECT to control costs while maintaining an accelerated development schedule, Klaas Pieter van Til CEO of TBA said: “The best approach to managing this is to test the functionality and performance of the high level control software before it is installed and while it is being built. eM-Plant from Tecnomatix offered the perfect solution for balancing cost and development time.”

Commenting on the simulation model, Lennart Lundstrom, Senior Project Manager at Navis said: "It will save time and money by allowing the development team to verify complex scheduling algorithms very early in the development cycle. "

Harel Beit-On, chairman and CEO of Tecnomatix Technologies noted that this was another innovative application of the company’s factory floor simulation product, showing the versatility of the eMPower product line. “Simulation is a critical part of any new production environment, whether the goal is assembling a product or ensuring that goods reach their intended destination. eM-Plant’s ability to model very complicated processes involving thousands of individual components makes it an ideal choice for many different applications, from manufacturing to logistics and transportation.”
