28th January, 2004 - The British Olympic Association (BOA) today announced Easynet as its Official Broadband Network Partner. Easynet will support the BOA for the next three years, throughout the Olympic Games in Athens 2004 and the Winter Olympics in Turin in 2006.

The BOA does not receive any government funding and is dependent upon business sponsorship and fund-raising activity to enable elite athletes to compete effectively and achieve their full potential. No modern sporting organisation can function effectively without high quality telecommunications and as part of this sponsorship Easynet is providing the BOA with broadband networking services, linking all its offices efficiently and cost-effectively.

Simon Clegg, Chief Executive of the BOA said: “The BOA provides the infrastructure that enables elite British athletes to compete at the highest level. Easynet provides the infrastructure that will enable British business to compete in the global marketplace of the future. Easynet’s sponsorship is a great example of British business getting behind British sport, and they will be joining our Olympic family which includes adidas, Rover and Heineken.”

Easynet is also supporting the BOA’s Schools Programme, which as part of the National Curriculum, aims to raise awareness of the Olympics. Easynet already helps schools and educational authorities adopt broadband to enhance teaching and learning.

David Rowe, CEO Easynet said: “We are extremely proud to be sponsors of the British Olympic Team, and the alliance between Easynet and the BOA combines the best of British Sport with the best of British Business. There’s a great synergy between our two organisations and a common belief in the importance of competitive excellence, personal development and achievement and team spirit. Easynet and BOA are a winning partnership and we’re ready to give the British Team all the support it needs to go for gold.”

About the British Olympic Association

The British Olympic Association (BOA) was formed at a meeting at the House of Commons on 24 May, 1905. It is the National Olympic Committee for Great Britain. It is charged under the Olympic Charter with taking the Great Britain team to the Olympic and Winter Olympic Games and managing the Team throughout the Games. In addition, the BOA provides services to athletes over the four year Olympic cycle which include: medical screening at the Olympic Medical Institute in North London; overseas preparation camps prior to major overseas events including the Olympics; managing an Austrian training base primarily dedicated to our winter athletes. The BOA also has a responsibility of delivering educational material throughout the country regarding the Olympic movement and is a key stakeholder in the attempt to bring the Games to London in 2012.

Great Britain is one of only five countries, which has never failed to be represented at the Olympic Games since 1896: Australia, France, Greece and Switzerland being the others. Of these, only France, Great Britain and Switzerland have also been present at all Olympic Winter Games. The BOA has assisted in hosting two Olympic Games, in 1908 and 1948, on both occasions in London.
