Managed Anti Virus System Protects Within Minutes of Outbreak

London, UK – 9 February, 2004 – As companies begin to count the cost of MyDoom, described by some reports as the ‘worst ever’ virus, hundreds of customers with SonicWALL’s managed anti virus solution have carried on with business as usual safe in the knowledge their systems were protected within minutes of the outbreak first appearing.

While the MyDoom (or Shimg) virus wreaked its havoc on Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 January, information gathered by SonicWALL, released today, shows that its Complete AV solution had enforced new signature updates for all subscribers by 9pm on 27 January – just five minutes after McAfee released the virus definition data.

The experience of one customer, an automotive parts distributor operating from 35 locations around the UK, was typical. “I was at home with the flu when I learned about MyDoom,” said Mark Rudd, IT support manager at The L. Bennett and Son Group. “As the only IT person in the company I was extremely grateful we had the SonicWALL anti virus system. I knew it was keeping the business safe and that I had nothing to worry about.”

Based on McAfee VirusScan ASAP technology, Complete AV runs on SonicWALL’s gateway Internet security appliances which check all clients are running Anti-Virus with the latest signature files. Clients not in compliance are instructed to automatically download updates. Internet access is blocked until those clients comply with Anti-Virus policy to prevent virus propagation. Another feature, called rapid e-mail attachment blocking, provides immediate protection from a new virus outbreak by blocking suspect email strings even before the anti virus vendors have created a patch for it.

“Complete AV is the perfect anti virus solution for firms with limited IT resources who regularly communicate with telecommuters, branch offices and remote business units over the Internet,” said Paul Thackeray, SonicWALL’s regional sales director, UK & MEA. “In addition to being an invaluable safeguard against business disruption from viruses it is also extremely cost effective. We calculate that Complete AV cuts the lifetime costs of typical anti virus solutions by up to 80 per cent. Your IT resources need never worry about updates again and can stay focused on other critical projects.”

About MyDoom

Reports estimate that the MyDoom worm was accounting for 20-30% of worldwide e-mail traffic Wednesday 28 January, putting it well ahead of previous viruses, such as the SoBig.F worm. One leading anti virus vendor is quoted as having intercepted more than 3.4 million copies of MyDoom, which infected one 1 of every 12 messages, at its peak. That compares with a total of 33 million infections and a peak rate of 1 in 17 for SoBig.F. The after effects of the virus could leave thousands of infected machines with open ports and vulnerable to future attacks.
