Demand For Remote Access To Corporate Networks Fuelling SSL VPN Market,
But Requires Strong Authentication Functionality If It Is To Surpass IPSec
SSL VPN (Secure Socket Layer Virtual Private Network) solutions require strong authentication functionality if they are to surpass the use of IPsec VPNs, according to European SSL VPN market leaders, PortWise.
Security technologies used to be applied mainly to the network perimeter, protecting the borders of the corporate LAN. However, security requirements today have expanded to encompass other access devices on the network as the voracious demand for remote access and mobile computing continues. Whilst companies can harness significant cost and productivity savings through the use of SSL VPNs (Secure Socket Layer Virtual Private Networks), their main weakness to date has been in the area of authentication, which was traditionally far weaker than IPSec.
“Users today want secure remote access to the corporate network with low cost of deployment and ownership, little or no end-user support, and without the need for internal changes to corporate applications,” said Kaushik Thakkar, Co-Founder and Vice President Strategic Development for PortWise. “IPsec VPNs are optimised for site to site communications and involve both installation and configuration, impacting the network infrastructure, which make them cumbersome for mobile workers. The main advantage until now has been IPsec’s stronger authentication capabilities. At PortWise, we have incorporated sophisticated authentication functionality, combined with strong access and authorisation to create the market’s most advanced and functionally rich SSL VPN solution.”
PortWise mVPN offers support to a wide range of authentication solutions and can easily integrate tailored solutions. Supported authentication solutions include dual factor authentication, RADIUS, PKI file based, token or smartcards, as well as LDAP, Active Directory and static passwords.
SSL VPN is one of the key trends of 2004 as companies empower their workforces with roaming mobility through laptops and smart phones. Jupiter Research anticipates the SSL VPN market to grow to $986 million by 2005 with 80% of corporate enterprises having some form of mobile security. As the European leader in the SSL VPN market, PortWise has a client portfolio that includes over 150 corporate customers, 500,000 users and some of the world’s largest implementations.
“As the SSL VPN market matures, users will no longer be willing to trade increased security for unmet demands for remote access or more remote access for less security. We have delivered a new generation of remote access solutions that comprises authentication, authorisation and auditing. Not only do we have a significant technological lead, but we also have a wealth of experience gained from working with our blue chip customer base, which includes the largest SSL VPN implementations in the world,” added Thakkar.
SSL is generally known as a Web security standard. However, it is actually a security standard available to any application With PortWise mVPN it is now possible to provide universal application access including web applications, e-mail, ftp, file sharing and terminal emulation.
