"Doctors for Reform" - Expert opinion available/contact details below

I am writing to provide details of an expert who can comment on the challenge posed to the NHS today, by the organisation "Doctors for Reform", which calls for the introduction of compulsory health insurance.

Des Benjamin, Chief Executive at HSA, is available for media interviews and debates.

Des Benjamin can comment on the following:

Are the "Doctors for Reform" plans for the NHS achievable? - Research conducted by HSA indicates that plans to introduce payment for health services will be a difficult yet effective way of reducing the burden on the NHS. The research reveals that a large percentage of the population currently have no means for funding their healthcare which is a reason for many delaying health check-ups or treatments. Many of these treatments are for basic health problems but if ignored, could escalate into more severe conditions.

What are the options available to the populace in terms of improving access to and reducing the cost of healthcare now? - As the HSA group provides private medical insurance and health cash plans, our spokesperson could discuss generally how the private health insurance market works and how potential consumers can evaluate the best option for them.

HSA's opinion on reforming the NHS - HSA is currently lobbying the government to consider reforming the entire health service to integrate more closely with private insurance organisations, such as HSA. HSA's belief is that by reforming the health service into a health system, the wider populace will have a greater choice over where their money is distributed, and greater and cheaper access to health treatments. Currently the NHS performs the function of a repair service - patients only have the funds or accessibility to use it when they are faced with a pressing health problem. A complete health system, on the other hand, would ensure that all levels and severities of health requirements are provided for leaving the NHS to concentrate on lifelong/lifethreatening conditions.

Background on HSA

HSA is the largest health cash plan provider in the UK, with over 3 million UK customers ( on par with BUPA). It has an 80 year heritage in improving access to and reducing the cost of health treatments and check-ups in the UK. Customers contribute a few pounds a month and in return receive money which can be put towards the cost of NHS or private health treatment.

Des Benjamin's media experience includes:

Interviews for national and regional radio stations, national and regional newspapers, business and trade publications. He also regularly speaks at national healthcare and insurance conferences.
