PowerDsine Marks Milestone With PoE Certification of 25th IP Phone Vendor

London, UK, 2nd March 2004 - PowerDsine®, the leading provider of Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology, today announced that it has certified its twenty-fifth IP phone vendor for interoperability with the IEEE 802.3af PoE standard. This milestone further illustrates PowerDsine's leadership in PoE technology and the company's success in driving IEEE 802.3af-based certification for new Voice over IP (VoIP) phones worldwide.

According to IDC research last November, worldwide IP telephone unit sales are set to grow from 1.5 million in 2003 to nearly 5 million in 2007. With IP phone sales expected to explode over the next few years, PowerDsine's PoE technology and certification program will play an instrumental role as PoE promises to save companies as much as 50% on the cost of deploying each end-user device.

"PowerDsine co-founded the IEEE 802.3af Task Force and has held its leadership position in the Power over Ethernet market by helping vendors build and certify PoE-enabled IP phones, wireless LAN access points, Bluetooth access points, network cameras and other Ethernet-connected devices," said PowerDsine CEO and co-founder, Igal Rotem. "Our certification program invites any equipment vendor to partner with us, so ultimately end users can choose from a wide variety of interoperable 802.3af-compliant products."

Now that 802.3af-compliant phones are available, adopters finally feel comfortable deploying VoIP technology knowing that it will interoperate with next-generation equipment. More importantly, end users see the significant cost savings that PoE delivers. With PoE, IP phones and other devices receive power, data, voice and video via the Ethernet network, thus eliminating the need to contract an electrician to install additional power cabling and AC outlets.

To date, PowerDsine has certified multiple IP phone models from vendors such as Avaya, Mitel, Nortel, 3Com, Cisco and numerous others.

About IEEE 802.3af Standard
The standard, approved by the International Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Standards Board on 12 June, 2003, outlines how to feed power to LAN-connected devices, such as VoIP phones, wireless LAN access points, and IP network cameras, over Ethernet cabling. For more information on the standard, go to http://www.standards.ieee.org.

802.3af addresses and defines the following issues:

Legacy Installation - Power over Ethernet ensures safe delivery of power to existing legacy devices as well as power-enabled terminals.

Preservation of Cabling Infrastructure - PoE avoids altering existing wiring and does not damage cabling infrastructure already in place.

Data Integrity - Power delivery over Ethernet cables does not cause data degradation or loss of data integrity.
