National supply chain management and performance packaging specialist Product Support Limited (PSL) has won a 5 year contract with Westland Helicopters to manage core elements of Westland’s post sales and repair service.
The contract will be managed from the company's Yeovil Support Centre and is worth £20M over five years. It is the cornerstone of a ten year memorandum of understanding that has been signed on the back of a 40 year trading relationship between the two companies.
Product Support Limited employs more than 100 people at sites in Yeovil and more than 400 people nationwide. The Company specialises in supply chain management in the aerospace, defence, marine and electronic sectors. Clients include BAE SYSTEMS, The MoD, Honeywell and Celestica. The company has particular expertise in high value items, which are commonplace in the defence industry.
Under the terms of the contract Product Support Limited will are responsible for the receipt, processing, packing and despatch for all spare parts produced by both Westland and third party contract manufacturers for a wide range of helicopters including Apache, Sea King, EH101, Lynx and Puma.
As Douglas Evans, Chief Executive of Product Support Limited points out, “The ability to trace a component right through the extended supply chain vital within the defence industry. The company also has expertise in the design and production of specialist packaging for military components to the MoD Standard DR14. Products are shipped to more than 15 destinations worldwide including Brazil, Malaysia, Japan, Australia, Oman, Canada and Norway.
Douglas Evans added, "Helicopter spare parts are a very expensive commodity and designing protective packaging for these is a complex task. We have to produce packaging that can withstand the rigours of many varied environments, ranging from desert to jungle, as well as for components entering long term storage. Given the value of these components it is vital that when they are removed from their packaging they are in pristine condition and ready for use".
The Company also manages a repair and overhaul distribution centre in Yeovil and a major supply chain operation for the Apache Helicopter programme inside Wattisham Station near Ipswich, on behalf of Westland Helicopters.
In addition to its direct work with Westland, Product Support Limited has established a unique relationship with the MoD, which facilitates the transfer of goods between both parties without any item leaving the PSL support centre. This is a prime example of how Product Support Limited has innovated the service provided by Westland to their customers and realised mutual benefits for all parties.
By working for both Westland and the MoD, Product Support Limited has been able to reduce the time it takes for Westland to receive payment for goods and from the MoD perspective the innovative process introduced by Product Support Limited reduces the overall delivery time.
As part of the continuing development of the relationship, Product Support Limited is also working closely with Westland on the development of innovative supply chain practices to enable Westland to further improve customer service. The collaboration includes work on I.O.S. (Integrated Operational Support) programmes for the Sea King and Merlin Helicopters.
