London – April 20, 2004 – BorderWare Technologies Inc., The Security Appliances Company, today announced MXtreme Mail Firewall version 4.0. MXtreme 4.0 adds new features and functionality in five key areas – security, policy enforcement, manageability, audit reporting, and availability – to deliver the industry's most robust solution for securing an enterprise's entire email infrastructure.

MXtreme protects enterprise email from threats including Denial-of-Service attacks like MyDoom, buffer overflows, directory harvesting, spam, viruses, and other vulnerabilities that could paralyse email communications. Version 4.0 sets the benchmark for email security with enhancements in five key areas:

Security: MXtreme is built on BorderWare's S-Core hardened and optimised operating system that has been field-tested on the Internet for 10 years and certified under the Common Criteria at Evaluation Assurance Level 4 (EAL4) as part of the BorderWare Firewall Server. MXtreme itself is currently under assessment by the Common Criteria for EAL4 certification, a process that is expected to complete in the next 30 days. This would make MXtreme the first email firewall appliance to achieve EAL4.

Policy Enforcement: MXtreme delivers advanced spam detection, built-in anti-virus scanning, attachment controls and a full range of content filters that can be selectively applied by domain, group and individual user for full policy control. New in version 4.0 are further improvements in MXtreme's native anti-spam technology, yielding improved detection and accuracy, and less IT administration with the addition of user-based spam quarantine, personal whitelisting, and advanced controls for handling intercepted messages. SMTP authentication can be enabled to allow external servers or clients to relay mail through MXtreme based on local user accounts, Radius or LDAP authentication. A state-of-the-art policy enforcement engine now offers full LDAP integration.

Manageability: MXtreme 4.0 reduces the costs of administration, improves overall security and delivers real control with a centralised consolidated solution. The new version integrates with leading SNMP-based enterprise management suites, providing system health (disk, CPU etc.) as well as mail queue and spam statistics. In addition, LDAP is fully integrated to authenticate access and manage groups and users.

Audit Reporting: MXtreme has the most powerful email reporting system available, allowing complete audit, monitoring, and accounting of all messaging activities. In MXtreme 4.0 reports and email database queries can be generated across single or clustered systems. An audit trail of administrative activities is also new.

Availability: MXtreme 4.0 introduces Failsafe Clustering architecture for high availability that ensures email is never lost due to individual system failure. MXtreme 4.0 is the first email firewall to provide enterprises with a carrier-grade failsafe clustering architecture for high availability, which is achieved through its unique security, cluster management, load balancing and optimisation, and patent-pending "stateful failover" capabilities.

"The business criticality of e-mail is forcing organisations to thoroughly evaluate their email security infrastructure. Beyond spam and viruses, enterprises must focus on overall email security, policy enforcement, reporting and auditing, and high availability," said Matt Cain, Sr. Vice President, META Group. "Elements like SNMP MIBs, EAL4 certification, an emphasis on manageability and stability provide market differentiation in this complex and vibrant market."
