SafeNet (NASDAQ: SFNT), a leading provider of private and public network security solutions that set the standard for securing virtual private and wide area networks, today announced the development of Luna SP, an application security appliance designed to make it easier to deploy secure Java applications, such as Java Web Services, with powerful cryptographic functionality. Luna SP features high-performance processing power, an integrated FIPS 140-2 Level 3 validated hardware security module (HSM), and flexible network-attached connectivity to allow enterprises to develop and deploy high-assurance Java applications within an application security appliance.

Traditionally, applications reside on servers that offer relatively little security for the applications running on them. This was not a significant problem in closed systems, but as the Internet and web services have opened applications up to the world, the need for application security has increased. Luna SP is designed to provide a secure Web Service application environment, combined with powerful cryptographic processing in a single, easy to deploy appliance platform. Luna SP allows IT administrators to maintain strict control over applications that are executed with digitally-signed code to prevent tampering and ensure application integrity. Strict controls over who can upload and execute code on Luna SP ensures that only authorised applications can be executed within the Luna SP, preventing the insertion of rogue code from unauthorised sources.
Luna SP also includes an integrated FIPS 140-2 level 3 validated HSM capable of performing over 1200 transactions per second (1024-bit RSA operations) to provide high-performance cryptographic processing for applications requiring key generation, enciphering, deciphering, or digital signatures. All cryptographic key materials are maintained exclusively within the confines of the HSM and are never exposed to the application or users. Access to key materials stored on the Luna SP’s HSM is controlled via a dedicated authentication terminal and security policy to control application access.
