Smart card leader teams with expert RFID design firm

27 April 2004

Giesecke & Devrient (G&D), the international technology group and the
leading provider of contactless smart cards to the transit market, has
licensed Jewel(TM), the low-cost contactless smart card chip for mass
transit ticketing from Innovision Research & Technology plc, the RFID
design services specialist.

Jewel is the smallest and lowest-cost chip ever produced for smart card
applications, and is already attracting huge interest from the US mass
transit sector. With a very small silicon area, the Jewel chip is
inexpensive to produce and compatible with international standards -
including ISO 14443A, the new UK transport standard ITSO version 2.1
and the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey's Regional
Interoperability Standards (RIS) Limited Use fare card specifications.
It enables production and deployment of contactless tickets compatible
with existing ticket types in smart card-enabled public transportation
systems.

"The Jewel contactless smart card is the first of its kind, and a true
solution for transit agencies that want total migration to contactless
smart card technology for all their ticketing needs. The Jewel
contactless smart card provides a cost effective alternative to transit
agencies for use as a single ride ticket or other limited use transit
ticketing options," said Hassan Tavassoli, Director of Industry and
Government for Giesecke & Devrient's North American Card Systems
Division. "Our transit customers needed a low-cost contactless solution
and we are answering the call."

"Giesecke & Devrient's strong position in the North American mass
transit market and its decision to license the Jewel technology is a
clear sign to the industry that our innovative approach to smart
ticketing is the way forward for mass transit operations," said Marc
Borrett, Managing Director of Innovision R&T. "Jewel contactless
tickets provide a range of improvements for the mass transit industry -
from much more efficient card reading to infinitely better passenger
movement management, security and fraud protection. For operators, the
increased ticketing functionality is accompanied by cost savings across
the board. For travellers, contactless tickets can greatly improve
convenience and safety."
