KVS Inc. announced today that sixty-five customers are now utilizing EMC Centera content addressed storage (CAS) with KVS e-mail archiving software. For more than two years, KVS has been a key member of EMC’s Centera partnership program, an open initiative that includes many of the industry’s leading ISVs in areas such as e-mail archiving and content management.

With the growth of increased regulatory requirements and federal mandates such as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996), many progressive organizations have deployed industry-specific, end-to-end solutions, including e-mail archiving to address their compliance needs and lower costs. Many of these companies have adopted EMC - KVS technology to address these growing e-mail archiving requirements and information lifecycle management challenges.

The EMC-KVS package, which couples EMC Centera CAS with KVS’ Enterprise Vault® for Microsoft Exchange, allows organizations in industries such as healthcare and financial services, to comply with federal mandates for e-mail retention. The sixty-five joint customers currently using EMC-KVS technology represent leading companies in key vertical markets such as financial services, pharmaceutical, telecommunications, entertainment, transportation and the public sector.

Tom Heiser, EMC Senior Vice President and General Manager Centera Business Unit, said, “Our customer commitment to keeping EMC Centera open is demonstrated by the success that our many Centera partnerships are experiencing in the marketplace. EMC collaborates with industry-leading application-specific software providers, like KVS, to arm customers with the technology they need to align IT infrastructure with key business objectives such as regulatory compliance.”

Approximately one-third of the joint customers have main operations outside of North America, including the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). “KVS and EMC worked with us to determine our specific needs around mailbox management,” said John Varney, chief technology officer for the BBC. “We need a secure, fully searchable archive, and expect to realize cost savings, in terms of preserving valuable storage space.”

Mike Hedger, CEO, KVS, said, “The realization among European and Asian companies that they need to implement a more comprehensive email archiving solution is growing just as quickly as it is among their North American counterparts. Combining Enterprise Vault with EMC Centera is an extremely compelling response to this growing demand of high availability, low cost storage management for unstructured data. We’re providing our customers worldwide with a tremendous advantage when it comes to dealing with the retention of vital corporate knowledge assets.”

EMC Centera represents an entirely new storage architecture specifically designed to address the unique information storage requirements of Fixed Content. Centera CAS is the first cross-application, cross-industry, unifying storage platform for Fixed Content. EMC Centera content addressing technology provides online access and assured long-term content authenticity of e-mail archives. EMC Centera’s content authenticity features have prompted its industry-wide recognition as the first disk-based write once, read many storage medium, and its self-healing capabilities ensure e-mail integrity for organizations that must retain and retrieve e-mail for extended periods of time.

In addition to enabling regulatory compliance, KVS’ Enterprise Vault increases information worker productivity through automatically moving information into storage, eliminating document message and content storage responsibilities from individual users. The results are reduced administration and storage costs and protection against records being altered or deleted.
