Simi Belo, the designer of the innovative ‘NewHair™’ wig has been honoured with a prestigious ‘Special Recognition Award’ by GWIIN, The Global Women Inventors & Innovators Network. Belo’s revolutionary NewHair™ wig design was one of twenty inventions or innovations to win a highly-coveted GWIIN 2004 award, selected from entries from women from all over the world. It was the only hair-related product to win an award, acknowledging UK innovation in the global hair industry, alongside inventions and innovations mostly from the scientific, technological and engineering sectors.

Belo designed the NewHair™ wig to address the many drawbacks of a ‘weave-on’ (the weaving or gluing of wefts of artificial hair onto the wearer’s own hair to create a full head of hair). The NewHair™ wig features a rectangular gap in the hairline at the front of the wig, allowing the wearer to include a parting in his / her hairstyle, so that s/he can show off some of her own hair, scalp and roots. Unlike a weave-on, the NewHair™ wig only takes only a few seconds - and not hours - to wear and remove; the wearer only needs to pay for it once; and there is no need for the sewing or gluing of artificial hair onto real hair. All in all, the NewHair™ wig provides consumers with a cheaper, more convenient, longer-lasting and more realistic-looking alternative to a weave-on. NewHair™ was launched in the UK at the beginning of March 2004 by Imiis Limited, (the London-based sales and marketing company founded by Belo), and is sold by the likes of Selfridges.
