Comprehensive outsourcing attitude survey conducted
London, June 1st, 2004 – Attenda, recently undertook one of the most comprehensive outsourcing attitude surveys conducted amongst mid market companies. Fifty IT Directors amongst the FTSE 200 – 500 were interviewed and the results provided a fascinating insight into attitudes to selective outsourcing and offshore provision of IT services.
Whilst two thirds of companies said that they were open to the idea of outsourcing and 92% of those had already entered into managed services agreements, the UK was by far the preferred location, with 64% having only had UK based contracts.
The principal reason for adopting selective outsourcing amongst all interviewees was to achieve cost savings (69%). However, amongst those who had already adopted some form of outsourcing, the number one motivation behind outsourcing was to access skills which were not available to them (81%). These two findings reflect the concerns of mid-sized companies who are unable to support a large IT department and disparate skill sets, but must focus on delivering cost effective services to the business.

The survey went on to examine attitudes towards offshore outsourcing and found that 35% had entered into offshore agreements, with application development most likely to be sent offshore. There was however considerable reluctance to consider sending infrastructure management offshore (4%). As one interviewee commented, "Infrastructure is mission critical, without it we have no business”. Gandhi continued, “Unlike global corporations, mid market companies are less familiar with working in teams that cross continents. They are not culturally ready for multi-national delivery. What they need is UK based services at offshore prices. Attenda can provide that mix.”
The survey was conducted by Vanson Bourne on behalf of Attenda. Heads of IT within 50 companies were interviewed, representing 16.5% or I in 6 of the total universe of 300 companies. The turnover of the participating companies ranged from £300m to more than £1bn.
