CHEVIN EXTENDS CAPABILITIES OF CASTLE ROCK COMPUTING’S SNMPC WITH ENHANCED TROUBLESHOOTING FROM SOFTWARE AGENTS

Chevin, the network management solutions company, has extended the capabilities of Castle Rock Computing’s SNMPc to offer traffic visibility, packet capture and expert analysis from any server, workstation or segment. SNMPc is a secure distributed network management system that monitors the entire network infrastructure. The TeVISTA for SNMPc plug-in module builds on the picture provided by SNMPc and extends the general troubleshooting capabilities. Full conversation, utilisation, error and protocol details can be viewed for any host, network segment, or Internet/WAN connection. TeVISTA for SNMPc is available through Castle Rock resellers via its distribution agreement with Teneo (www.teneo.co.uk).

Mark Kerrison, commercial director at Chevin commented, “We are privileged to be working with Castle Rock whose SNMPc is a market-leading network management system. With our TeVISTA Visibility Agents providing network analysis in real time, we have taken the performance of the SNMPc product to the next level. Castle Rock’s customers now have an answer to the question ‘how do I actually solve network traffic problems even if they happened ten minutes ago?’”

SNMPc’s distributed polling architecture makes it easy to manage networks that span multiple sites. In the event of a network problem (device failure, high utilisation, low disk capacity) SNMPc will generate an email or pager alert. Networks can be managed remotely with the Windows Client and Java Web Consoles and export map topology, trend statistics and event log entries to other databases. TeVISTA for SNMPc extends this reach, enabling monitoring activity from every PC or Server on the network and making it easier and quicker to resolve problems as they occur.

TeVISTA Visibility Agents (TVA) are deployed directly onto users’ workstations and servers on the network. The TVA acts like a Distributed Probe, providing traffic visibility and packet capture so Expert Analysis can be used to investigate both local and remote problems. The software-based TVAs give significant cost savings compared to traditional hardware probes and also enable wider deployment. The TVA can store historical information on the agent, which means that problems can be addressed and resolved retrospectively. This feature can be extremely useful for intrusion detection.

TeVISTA for SNMPc includes a protocol analyser that offers expert diagnostics and frame decoding in real time, during capture. This shows a detailed overview of all network activity related to the segment of the PC or Server with the agent on it, revealing exactly what is happening on the network that may be affecting reliability or speed of performance, including:

• Full packet capture and decode in real time or historically
• Expert analysis on every PC or Server
• Node information including details of all nodes broadcasting on every network segment
• Full conversation breakdown
• Protocol & Application breakdown
• Error information
• Network usage broken down into traffic type, application and user type or group

Piers Carey, CEO at Teneo, Castle Rock Computing’s European Distributor, commented, “TeVISTA for SNMPc is a breakthrough in network management. Never has it been so quick, easy or affordable to analyse - and therefore troubleshoot - network activity. Corporate networks can now benefit from maximum uptime for minimum resource expenditure. "
