NOP World survey reveals that UK law firms are worried that digital security threats will damage their professional reputation, but many are guilty of security breaches

London, 3 June, 2004 – A large proportion of UK law firms have lost clients or damaged their client relationships as a result of digital security breaches such as email misuse, undetected computer viruses or hackers. These are the results of a survey of 100 senior UK legal practitioners, conducted by NOP World, which also confirmed that 40 percent feel at risk of damaged company brand and/or personal reputation from digital security breaches in the workplace.

The survey was commissioned by corporate digital security specialist Evolution Systems, which today launches its Legal Industry Security Solutions Practice. It highlighted that there are real threats, serious concerns and a lack of understanding of digital security issues among UK law firm partners, such as email misuse, computer virus and other threats. Evolution Systems’ new legal industry practice is designed to provide law firms with a managed portfolio of security tools, products and expertise, to meet their entire needs.

Highlights of the survey include:

**One in ten UK law firms have suffered breaches of digital security in the last 12 months

**6 percent of UK law firms have lost clients or damaged relationships as a result of security breaches in the past 12 months

**40 percent feel at risk of damaged company brand and/or personal reputation from digital security breaches in the workplace

**67 percent ask colleagues to check emails on their behalf

**41 percent actually have colleagues read emails to them over the phone or in person

**50 percent considered that loss of email access would damage their business in less than one day

**65 percent feel that digital security risk is increasing in their industry

“Clients are the lifeblood of any professional services company and mitigating the risk of damage to company reputation should be the top priority of Managing Partners,” said Ritchie Jeune, group CEO, Evolution Systems. “However a significant proportion of the UK’s 14,000 legal practices appear to be losing clients as a result of security breaches. Being secure requires more than just basic checks and antivirus software. It requires informed policy making, continual education, and the right portfolio of security tools. The first stage in this process should be a digital security audit in order to understand and deal with all relevant threats.”

Evolution Systems’ Legal Industry Security Solutions Practice addresses the security needs of law firms by providing a tailor-made approach to security, based on best of breed products and expert consulting. Products and services included in the solutions include: authentication, e-mail security, internet content security, intrusion detection, outsourced security management, penetration testing, policy review, remote access, risk assessment, security healthchecks, support and vulnerability assessment.
