The North East is set to benefit from a new highly resilient telecoms infrastructure thanks to a £700,000 12-month contract. The agreement was signed between pan-European broadband networking company Easynet, Regional Development Agency One NorthEast and Adit North East, the region’s public body charged with aggregating public sector demand for high-speed, always-on Internet access.

The contract is one of the first to be signed within the Broadband Aggregation Framework, which enables faster, simplified procurement processes for the public sector and will encourage overseas and public sector organisations to invest in the region.

This project will form the foundation stone on which to build additional services, applications and connectivity for the region and ultimately assist in making the North East region an exemplar in Hosting, Data Storage and Disaster Recovery

Easynet has an existing presence in the region with its extensive broadband infrastructure. The high capacity network will be made available at both data centres in Newcastle and Sunderland, and will also link both centres together ensuring maximum resilience and disaster recovery.

Andy Long, Head of Public Sector, Easynet, said: “Easynet has supported the Broadband Aggregation Programme from its outset. There are clear advantages to service providers working closely with regional bodies in order to deliver best value broadband. This project demonstrates the benefits that can arise from such relationships and we are delighted to be working closely with One North East and Adit North East to deliver such an innovative networking solution to the area.”

Maitland Hyslop, Head of Knowledge, Information and ICT at One North East, said: “The North East of England has a first class industrial and commercial infrastructure combined with excellent communications links. Safe, fast communications infrastructure is crucial for all organisations, and we are confident that the new network technology will provide this and will prove an asset to the region

Ed Brown, CEO of Adit North East said: “Easynet was able to respond to our request with an innovative, secure solution within very short timescales. This project illustrates the role of the Regional Aggregation Boards, both to ensure value for money for individual government departments, and to enable the extension of broadband networks to increase competitiveness.”
