Tickets go on sale today (Tuesday 15 June) for Flying Scotsman's first regular scheduled service since the historic rail icon was saved for the nation by the National Railway Museum.

The legendary Flying Scotsman - the most famous steam locomotive in the world - will run between York and Scarborough for six weeks only on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 20 July to 31 August. There will be two return trains per day from York, giving passengers three journey options: a lunchtime excursion, an evening sundowner special, and a full day excursion. Passengers can also start their journey in Scarborough by booking a York return.

Andrew Scott, Head of the National Railway Museum, said: "The summer steam specials will be the first opportunity for Flying Scotsman supporters, fans and people from all over the UK and overseas to ride behind the museum's newest attraction.

"The lunchtime departure is ideal as part of a family day out, offers two hours free in Scarborough and still leaves enough time for a visit to the NRM. The 'sundowner' will appeal to visitors staying overnight in York who will have the opportunity to experience the romance of steam and the majesty of Flying Scotsman set against the backdrop of the setting sun."

Andrew Scott also had a word of warning: "We expect demand for tickets to ride behind the legendary locomotive to be very high and are advising that tickets are purchased in advance."

In order to provide a quality catering experience for the hundreds of people travelling on each train the NRM has hit on an ingenious idea the 'Lunch Hamper' and the 'Scotsman Supper'. Packed into a convenient and sturdy Flying Scotsman branded box, passengers will be able to enjoy a three course light meal including an entrée, a selection of gourmet sandwiches and a dessert. The meals even come complete with a quarter bottle of wine. A children's version is also available.

Flying Scotsman is currently in the Museum's state-of-the-art workshop, receiving a thorough service in preparation for the summer specials. The emergence of some minor mechanical problems prior to its arrival at the NRM meant the locomotive was unable to complete its planned inaugural run.

Jim Rees, Rail Vehicle Collections Manager at the NRM, said: "Now that we have Flying Scotsman in our workshop we can take the time to give it a good service, a little bit of the TLC it deserves and prepare it ready for its glorious summer tours."

Tickets including the light meal are priced £35 return per adult and £20 return per child. Standard returns without catering are £25 per adult and £15 per child. Tickets can be booked in person at the National Railway Museum in York during normal opening hours (10.00am to 6.00pm seven days a week), or at any time through Ticketmaster by telephoning 0870 145 1198 or on-line at
