A revolutionary low cost software solution which allows its users to locate a mobile phone to within 20m and display the location on a map on a PC is set to provide a breakthrough in child and lone worker safety for the nation’s parents and employers.

A Manchester based company, Mediaburst, has launched a product called OutlookSMS which integrates fully with e-mail packages Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express and Lotus Notes. It allows users to establish the location of a mobile phone within 30 seconds.

The product, which provides an extra toolbar in the e-mail application is the first of its kind in the world to be awarded the prestigious “Designed For XP” standard by Microsoft and it provides tracking technology for the price of two text messages.

The solution provides the missing link between e-mail and mobile phones and these are technologies which the vast majority of businesses and consumers already possess

Mediaburst believes the product will offer a real breakthrough for child safety and also for organisations from the Health Service to Estate Agents who have large numbers of field based lone workers. Not surprisingly the product also has the potential for people wanting to check up on the whereabouts of their partners.

The product features comprehensive opt-in technology which requires the mobile phone user to give consent to have their handset located and this ensures personal privacy is not breached. Once mobile phone owners have opted in and agreed to have their handsets located, they can opt out at any point in the future.

The company, which has spent more than £500,000 and two years developing the product also believes it will help British businesses manage field based personnel more efficiently by allowing the company to locate and then route the nearest resource to an urgent customer call at the touch of a button. Such a solution will help businesses save time and money associated with unnecessary journeys.

As well as providing sophisticated tracking software, OutlookSMS also offers an integrated service that allows users to send text messages to mobile phones directly from e-mail.

At present British businesses spend more than £1 billion every year on land-line to mobile phone calls. The average call duration is 3 minutes and at least 60% of these calls are to pass on simple messages which could easily be conveyed by SMS. OutlookSMS enables businesses to reduce such calls and in the process save as much as £160M per annum.

Despite the fact that text messaging has become a facet of everyday life with more than 20 billion messages sent every year in the UK, SMS has not been adopted as a business communications protocol because until now there has not been the recognition of its potential or the means to realise it.

The product is already available for sale on-line (www.mediaburst.com) as well as through retailers, a number of resellers and it will soon be on sale from mobile phone network O2. Prices for consumers start from just £34.99 including the first 50 text messages and there are several pricing plans available for businesses. Additional messages can be purchased from the Mediaburst web site. Versions for Outlook and Lotus Notes are already available and the Outlook Express version will be available from July.
