Bracknell, Berkshire, UK – June 21st, 2004 – Actuate Corporation (NASDAQ: ACTU), the world leader in Enterprise Reporting Applications, today announced Actuate 8 – the industry’s first real-time Enterprise Reporting Application Platform with integrated EII. Actuate is the first company within the Business Intelligence marketplace to integrate Enterprise Information Integration (EII) technology into an Enterprise Reporting solution -- enabling real-time reporting applications. The powerful on-demand data access capabilities of EII in combination with the new version of Actuate’s leading Enterprise Reporting Application Platform, allow organisations to gain real-time operational visibility, improve customer profitability and distribute accountability throughout the organisation. The improved timeliness and enhanced completeness of information delivered through Actuate 8 ensures 100% adoption of decision-making information.
“Unfortunately, line-of-business units are starved for timely and relevant access to information across the enterprise. While existing approaches including reporting, email, spreadsheets, data warehouse and data integration play a critical role, they do not address the gap required to improve operational performance. Ventana Research sees EII as a critical piece of every organisation’s need for on-demand access to disparate information to improve operational performance.” Source: Mark Smith, Ventana Research, “EII for Improving Operational Performance” – 27/5/04.
Actuate leverages EII technology that the company acquired through its acquisition of Nimble Technology to provide a breakthrough in Enterprise Reporting – the ability to deliver dynamic information to 100% of users, in the formats they expect – dashboards for executives and line managers, real-time web reports for customer service employees, spreadsheets for sales representatives and finance professionals, and personalised cubes for business analysts. Actuate 8 extends the data warehouse by providing users with on-demand access to information integrated from varied and disparate sources including ERP and CRM applications, data warehouses, legacy systems as well as XML and ODBC-based data sources.
Actuate 8 includes a unified metadata layer which improves the overall accuracy of information analysis and is accessible by all products within Actuate’s platform. In addition, Actuate provides organisations with the industry’s only server-managed spreadsheet solution, which has been enhanced in Actuate 8 to include PivotTables, Data Filters and other Excel functionality, thereby meeting business users’ need for the ease of use of Excel while maintaining ‘one version of the truth.’
"Actuate has helped us to create a single face for Lincoln Financial Distributors by providing consistent sales reporting data for our management team, internal and external sales force and financial intermediaries," said Miko Pickett, assistant vice president at Lincoln Financial Distributors, a key customer of Actuate. "The new functionality within Actuate 8 will help us further this goal by providing more timely, upgraded and streamlined sales reporting, which is a key tool in the development of our business metrics around productivity and profitability. Actuate's EII Option would give us the freedom to run more reports and extend our data warehouse, so that users may receive accurate information more promptly. In addition, the pivot tables within e.Spreadsheet will enable us to deliver electronic spreadsheets via the Web using every business person's tool of choice for analysis, Excel."
"We have been impressed with the potential for the new functionality within Actuate 8," said Chris Amos, delivery manager at BT Exact, British Telecom's network and information technologies business. "We expect to use the common metadata layer offered by the product to increase the number of options available to users analysing information without imposing a significant maintenance burden. We're also hoping that the inclusion of pivot tables in the server-managed spreadsheets will save us the re-keying and maintenance overhead associated the methods we currently use to publish material from Excel reports online, helping us give BT's people the information they need more quickly."
Actuate 8 Key Features
EII Option – Actuate 8’s EII Option supports the real-time integration of disparate data sources. Operational visibility is dramatically improved by gathering information from disparate sources including ERP and CRM applications, data warehouses, legacy systems and other XML-based data sources, which is then blended simultaneously and presented on-demand to a broad set of users in their preferred format – dashboards, spreadsheets, web reports, personalised cubes, email or PDFs. Actuate 8 allows information within a data warehouse to be supplemented with real-time operational information in order to obtain up-to-the minute insights and comply more easily with federal regulations, such as Sarbanes-Oxley. Siloed information can be combined to present a single view of the customer – which gives organisations the intelligence to improve customer profitability. In addition, companies can present one corporate face to the customer through self-service reporting that integrates da
ta from multiple sources, which improves customer retention and loyalty.
Unified Metadata Layer - Actuate 8 Information Objects present a sharable, reusable business-friendly data abstraction layer that allows IT to quickly create complex distributed queries that deliver operational information in real-time to all users across the enterprise. Users can then easily create, store and reuse queries against Information Objects as they write e.Reports, create e.Spreadsheets, or invoke Actuate Query.
e.Spreadsheet Designer Enhancements – Business users can now utilise the industry’s only server-based spreadsheet reporting solution to view budget variance reports and other summary analytic reports using Excel PivotTables and Data Filters. Actuate 8 supports the specifications of Excel PivotTables, Excel Data Filters and the creation of additional Excel Chart Types. Users can easily identify selection or exception criteria to answer questions such as who, what, when and where in the report. In addition, users can more easily spot problems and identify opportunities by utilising a larger number of Excel chart types, including 3D charts.
Adoption Monitoring - Actuate 8 includes new adoption monitoring capabilities that track usage of the system. These features will enable customers to monitor progress towards 100% user adoption of their Enterprise Reporting Applications and identify the reports and analyses that are most and least useful to users. These metrics will provide useful guidance on the enhancements necessary to increase the business impact of deployed Enterprise Reporting Applications.
“Enterprise Reporting Applications can help companies address the pressure to increase profitability, improve customer service and comply with new federal regulations,” said Pete Cittadini, president and CEO of Actuate Corporation. “Our strategic acquisition of Nimble Technology has provided us with a strong competitive advantage – the ability to deliver real-time enterprise reports to users in their preferred format – which allows CEOs and CFOs to distribute financial and operational accountability to 100% of the users throughout the organisation.”
Pricing and Availability
Actuate 8 will be available as a limited production release on June 30th and will be generally available in July. Pricing for Actuate 8 starts at $500 per named user.
