MySQL AB Launches UK and Ireland Sales Office

Open Source Database Leader Continues Worldwide Expansion to Support Strong Demand for MySQL Software and Services

LONDON, UK – (June 23, 2004) – MySQL AB, developer of the world's most popular open source database, today announced the launch of a UK and Ireland sales office, located in Dublin. MySQL’s newest office will support the growing demand for MySQL database software in the UK and Ireland, where the company already has hundreds of commercial software and support customers.

With a presence in 19 countries worldwide, MySQL’s new operation represents the latest step in the rapid growth of the company in Europe. According to Zack Urlocker, vice president at MySQL AB: “We now have more than 5 million active installations worldwide and are experiencing unprecedented demand for MySQL software and services. The UK and Ireland are key markets for MySQL, and with the establishment of our new in-country sales team, we aim to deliver even more value to these expanding markets.”

The Cambridge, England-based Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, a major
partner in the international Human Genome Project, uses the MySQL
database for several of the Institute's mission-critical programs to
manage massive amounts of data for human gene and disease identification.

"All our servers must be very robust," said Dr. David Harper, senior
computer programmer in Sanger's Pathogen Group. "MySQL meets those
requirements, and it's also easy to install and maintain. The Pathogen
Sequencing Unit at the Sanger Institute is dedicated to improving human
and animal health, and without robust and reliable databases, this would
not be possible."

Continued Urlocker: “We aim to provide businesses in the UK and Ireland with database management software that has superior performance, high reliability, and ease of use at very affordable prices. As a ‘second generation’ open-source company, we firmly believe we have a successful business model that is in harmony with our free software principles. MySQL’s “dual licensing” allows us to offer our software free of charge to customers under the GNU General Public License (GPL), while at the same time selling the same product under a regular commercial license. We can do this because we own all rights to our software.“

MySQL’s Flagship Product: The MySQL Database
The MySQL database maximizes speed and power in an extremely compact design. It has full transactional capabilities to support business- critical applications with a low total cost of ownership. MySQL is available on over 20 platforms, including all major Linux distributions, as well as Unix, Mac OS X and Windows operating systems.
The MySQL database today is the leading Web database, and is increasingly used in enterprise applications and in embedded in third-party software or hardware. Many of the most influential companies in the world rely on the MySQL database today, including Yahoo!, Google, Sabre Holdings, Cox Communications, Lufthansa Systems and Ericsson.

MySQL AB employs a dual-licensing structure that allows it to support its loyal user community with a sustainable business model. MySQL software is available at no cost under the open source GPL license for open source projects, and the company also provides commercial, non-GPL licenses for software vendors and other commercial MySQL customers.
