London, United Kingdom, 9 July, 2004 - Akamai Technologies Limited, a subsidiary of Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the global leader of distributed computing solutions and services, today announced that Carlsberg, the international provider of beer and beverage brands, has chosen the Akamai EdgeSuiteSM service to ensure consistent website availability and enhanced content delivery for end users of the company's brand site,, which includes promotional details in support of the 'Euro 2004' tournament, and the Carlsberg corporate site,

As a result, Carlsberg is able to improve site performance and scalability, while reducing Web infrastructure costs.

Jesper Vestergaard, Project Manager New Media, Corporate Marketing and Innovation, Carlsberg, commented, "With the run up to Euro 2004 and with the brand site being flash heavy, we needed to ensure the site was going to be as fast as possible to give users the best possible experience without compromising the load bearing requirements of the site. With high volumes of traffic expected, we couldn't afford to have any downtime during the tournament -- the site needed to be resilient at all times."

Akamai's market-leading services and global network of over 14,000 distributed edge servers were chosen to provide the solution to address Carlsberg's concerns regarding the anticipated volumes of site traffic and how to ensure uninterrupted availability of its online operations.

Akamai moved Carlsberg from a dedicated server environment to that of a distributed server environment, delivering content from the Akamai EdgePlatform, reducing the demands on Carlsberg's origin infrastructure while improving site performance and reliability.

"After reviewing various offerings, we opted for the EdgeSuite service as we were confident that Akamai's services would ensure user retention and uphold brand reputation which was an important factor for us," said Vestergaard. "Since Euro 2004 started, we have seen the amount of traffic double on the website and downtime or latency hasn't been an issue. We have also noticed that 50 percent of our increased user base are more focused and are staying on the site a lot longer, looking through content both directly by entering the URL in a web browser and via the Euro 2004 site. Akamai's services have helped us achieve these impressive results."

Alex Gibbons, Regional Sales Manger of Akamai in Northern Europe, said, "With a much publicised event such as Euro 2004, and knowing that public interest would be immense, optimal content delivery was crucial. We knew Carlsberg was going to expect incredibly high levels of traffic and would need to ensure that the site could not only cope with increased user demand for media rich content, but could deliver it to the user as fast and as reliably as possible. Akamai is proud to be associated with such a successful and high profile event."

The Akamai EdgeSuite service enables the generation and delivery of dynamic content that can be targeted and delivered from locations optimized for each end user. Given today's challenged IT budgets, the EdgeSuite service allows businesses to cost-effectively extend their critical Web infrastructure across Akamai's global platform, while retaining control of the business intelligence necessary to provide the optimal user experience.
