Lunch with the girls usually involves good food, wine and plenty of lively conversation. For 23-year-old Katy Rogers, lunch with her girlfriends changed her life – and that of her boyfriend Chris.
Katy said: “I met some friends for lunch in October last year and the subject of houses came up and the fact Chris and I were saving a deposit for an apartment. My friends told me about Bellway’s Hornbeams in Haywards Heath and said we should go and have a look.
“Chris and I met at work and have been together for around 4 years. A year ago we decided to buy a place together. We knew paying a mortgage wouldn’t be a problem as we’re both in regular employment; it was just saving enough for the deposit that would take time. We did our maths and worked out we’d have to remain living at our parents’ houses while we saved the deposit. This meant we wouldn’t be able to start looking for a place of our own until at least September 2004.
“Chris was already living in Haywards Heath and as we both work near Gatwick it was the right location for commuting to work. We went to the Hornbeams with the intention of just looking, not buying, as we hadn’t saved the full deposit. This changed the moment we walked into the show house kitchen and decided we had to live there. We spoke with Anne, the sales advisor who told us there were 2-bedroom apartments in our price range and that Bellway was offering to pay the deposit for first time buyers.
“We snapped up the offer and paid just £99 to reserve our apartment. As Bellway paid our deposit, stamp duty and legal fees this saved us around £11,000. We used the money we’d saved towards the deposit to pay off part of our mortgage. We moved into our apartment in April this year - 12 months ahead of schedule and are really enjoying living here.”
Chris Johnson (23) said: “We bought our apartment off-plan without even seeing a show apartment. To help us visualise the size of rooms in our apartment we made frequent visits to the show house with our parents and friends to measure up and compare the size of the rooms. At one stage this even involved my dad ‘pigeon stepping’ across the lounge floor to see how many footsteps we would have in our lounge. This is the first time we’ve left home and it’s great we were able to move into a place of our own rather than a rented flat.”
Set in Bolnore Village on the outskirts of Haywards Heath, The Hornbeams is a development of 102 new homes. The property mix includes 2-bedroom apartments and 2, 3, 4 and 5-bedroom houses. Three bedroom townhouses are priced from: £274,999 and four bedroom houses from: £289,999. All apartments and 5-bedroom houses have now been sold.
Surrounded by virgin woodland, residents can enjoy country living with easy access to town, as it’s approximately a 5-minute drive or 20-minute walk from Haywards Heath town centre where there’s a vibrant café society with wine bars and restaurants.
Frequent trains to London and Brighton ensure it’s great for commuting to the capital or South Coast. Journey times to London Victoria and London Bridge during the rush hour take around 45 and 50 minutes respectively and cosmopolitan Brighton is only 15 minutes away by train.
The first residents moved into their homes in May 2003 and the entire development is scheduled for completion in July 2004.
A show house is open daily from 10.00am to 5.30pm and a sales advisor can be contacted on telephone number: 01444 415076. The Hornbeams is at Bolnore Village, Haywards Heath, West Sussex RH16 4QX.
