Merchant Taylors’ School implements new high speed broadband Ethernet service from Equinox

Leading independent school Merchant Taylors’ School (MTS) has gone live with a 100Mbps Broadband Ethernet service provided by Equinox Converged Solutions, the broadband specialists to the education and public sector. The implementation will mean that MTS will be the first independent school in the UK with a 100Mbps high speed broadband connection.

Founded in 1561, MTS prides itself in setting high standards in all aspects of education for over 500 years. The school is already a pioneer in the use of ICT in the classroom through the extensive use of language labs, video conferencing, internet streaming and web based educational content as an integral part of increased pupil engagement and self-motivated learning and exploration programmes.

MTS wanted a broadband solution that would support its evolving IT infrastructure and extend the creativity of the school’s teaching into the digital dimension, but that would be easy to manage.

The installation of the new high speed connection will improve the operational efficiency of the ICT infrastructure, for example enabling pupils to download video news reports from around the world for translation purposes. Equinox will maintain MTS’ fully managed suite of services, including website filtering, email and virus scanning and web hosting.

Head Master Jon Gabitass comments, “We chose to work with Equinox based on the organisation’s understanding of and expertise in the education sector. In the 21st century, e-learning is a must however a balance must be made between giving pupils the freedom to explore and research using the internet, protecting them from accessing inappropriate material, keeping the IT infrastructure up-to-date with latest developments and of course controlling costs. Equinox will enable us to achieve all of this. By managing all aspects of the broadband connection, Equinox will take on the technical support responsibility, leaving us free to ensure that our pupils get the most out of the extended resources broadband will bring to them and support our dynamic e-learning strategy.”

MTS joins a further 73 percent of London schools which have broadband access via Equinox’s state of the art fibre network.
