Devoted parents who spend a fortune keeping their children entertained during the long summer break have suffered another blow – their offspring would rather go on holiday with SHREK.

Mums and dads scraped to fourth place in a national poll of youngsters aged between three and eight conducted by leading children’s ‘playbarn’ Wacky Warehouse.

The friendly green giant took first place with a staggering 55 per cent of the votes, followed by grandparents (15 per cent), best friend (12 per cent), parents (11 per cent) and brother/sister (seven per cent).

A hard-to-please 87 per cent of children said they want to be entertained “all the time” during the hols, with play barns, theme parks, seaside trips, wildlife parks and cinema outings rating as key activities – amusingly, 50 per cent of children think their parents will spend £1m on visits and excursions to places like the zoo!

And almost three-quarters (74 per cent) of parents say the cost of keeping their offspring entertained this summer holidays is their biggest concern, with the average family spending more than £2,000 this summer.

Given the results, it is perhaps not surprising that 68 per cent of parents feel the break should be reduced to four weeks.

Wacky Warehouse spokeswoman Jo Hutchinson said: “After all the planning and expenditure that can go into summer holidays, it must come as a bit of a blow to parents to realise that their children would rather be with a giant green ogre instead.

“But it’s easy to see why youngsters would rather go on their summer hols with Shrek – after all, he’s a great friend and loves practical jokes.

“He also loves adventure, which is what summer holidays are all about.”

Wacky Warehouses, which operates 120 outlets in the UK, polled 500 children and their parents.
