August 2004: By creating a blended learning programme incorporating e-learning, telecom giant, Equant, has been able to train over 8,500 employees globally and save $6.5million.

Equant developed the strategy to deliver a steady stream of consistently high-level training relating to Cisco, Microsoft, Oracle, telecommunications and networking. Traditional classroom instruction was time-consuming and costly – particularly for a diverse employee base dispersed across the globe - so the company integrated elements of instructor-led training with generic and company-specific e-learning, and then supplemented it with a 24x7 expert mentoring service.

To achieve this, Equant built the company-specific e-learning in-house and partnered with e-learning provider SkillSoft for the mentoring service and the generic e-learning content. By the end of 2003 more than 8,500 employees had actively used e-learning – a user rate of over 85%.

Peter Mansell, head of training at Equant’s Training Centre of Excellence, comments:

“e-learning has dramatically increased the scope, range and availability of training and development to all Equant employees. No other solution could possibly have achieved this in such a short timescale, particularly given the global distribution of our workforce in over 160 countries, and the commercial realities of our business.”

“The ultimate success of the project is due to the availability of each element and the way in which they all come together. We are now able to offer our employees top-level generic e-learning - backed up by experienced one-to-one mentoring; supplemented by our own bespoke e-learning modules; and reinforced within a classroom environment.”
