New features of SonicOS 2.5 firmware open wide range of easily-managed VPN options for TZ 170 and PRO series security gateways

London, UK – August 4, 2004 – SonicWALL, Inc., a leading provider of integrated security, productivity and mobility solutions, today announced the general release of the latest version of its operating system, SonicOS 2.5, which delivers greatly enhanced VoIP, intrusion prevention, multimedia, wireless, and secure VPN deployment capabilities.

SonicOS 2.5 interoperates with a wide range of third-party VoIP equipment including Cisco, Mitel, Pingtel, Grandstream, Polycom, D-Link, Pulver, Apple iChat, and ‘softphones’ from Yahoo, Microsoft, Ubiquity, and OpenPhone. It also provides substantially expanded multimedia options through full stateful IGMP multicast support and inbound bandwidth management features, which enable SonicWALL devices to process multimedia applications within a dynamic infrastructure. Additionally, SonicOS 2.5 offers wireless extensions supporting SonicWALL’s recently announced Distributed Wireless Solution for distributed wireless LANs.

SonicOS 2.5’s new transparent mode enables SonicWALL devices to be deployed easily and operate seamlessly within existing network infrastructures, irrespective of vendor, and includes policy-based routing, expanded logging, and multiple group VPN connectors.

“SonicOS 2.5 brings advanced capabilities within the grasp of the pragmatist market,” said Jamie Stapleton, vice president of Computer Business Solutions. “Our customers want to deploy advanced features such as wireless access, intrusion prevention, multimedia and even VoIP in a secure, simple and affordable way within their existing networks, and with SonicOS 2.5 this becomes possible. We believe this enhanced version of the firmware delivers a substantial added value to the SonicWALL range.”

“SonicOS 2.5 represents a significant advance in the level of secure network capabilities we can offer while still maintaining our focus on ease of use and affordability,” said Douglas Brockett, vice president of worldwide marketing at SonicWALL. “It enables network administrators to respond quickly to user demand for new technologies and features such as VoIP or multimedia, and deploy them without compromising budgets or security.”
