Traffic surge to Olympics sector as Brits score more medals

Hitwise, the world’s leading online competitive intelligence service, today reports that UK visits to Olympics websites have surged ahead in the final week of the Games. As Britain’s medal tally continues to rise, with Team GB now 10th in the overall medal table, online interest in the Games has correspondingly increased.

Saturday August 21st, hailed as Britain’s greatest-ever day in Olympic history, saw the biggest increase in traffic to Olympics related websites. As Britain hauled in its highest medal count so far in the Athens Games, scoring a record-breaking five gold medals, two silvers and three bronzes in one day, UK sports fans logged on to Olympics websites in bigger numbers than ever. The Olympics sector as a whole increased its market share by 14%, whilst several websites devoted to the Games also rocketed up the sports sector rankings on that day.

One such site was BBC Sport (news.bbc.co.uk/sport), which increased its traffic by 17% on Saturday August 21st. The BBC Sport website has been performing particularly strongly throughout the Games, capitalising on its ability to provide ‘on demand’ interactive Games content. The website has reported a record 6.13 million users for its interactive section since the Opening Ceremony on Friday August 13th, the highest figure since this year’s Wimbledon which saw just over 4 million users*. This coincides with an overall 28% increase in traffic since the beginning of the Games, and a jump in ranking from #22 to #18 out of all sites tracked by Hitwise UK.

The official Athens 2004 website (www.athens2004.com) also enjoyed a notable rise in traffic on August 21st, with increased interest from a triumphant UK audience propelling the website from #201 to #166 across sites in all categories.
