The physical network layer is a business issue, the managing director of a leading network continuity company has claimed.
βIntroduce a presentation to anyone but techheads with the deadly phrase βphysical layerβ, and youβre likely to find people eyeing the door for a quick get-away,β said Elliot Sylvester, managing director of Online Group. βOthers hastily scan their conference notes - assuming that theyβve wandered into the technical rather than business strategy stream by mistake.β
According to Sylvester, while the statement that data networks are the foundation of any modern business is so accepted that it is a clichΓ©, they are still taken for granted by many business leaders. βMany business people, even the non-techies, have heard of SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) and assume that the traditional network management packages which use it are taking care of their networks.
βBut these traditional network management tools only address the active equipment, leaving the physical layer as a critical blind spot,β he said. Research has shown that the physical layer of fibre and copper and its connectivity points are responsible for 70 per cent of all corporate network faults.
