MPL Powerware Systems, the UK division of Exide Electronics,
today announced it will market the next generation of cable
television network power protection UPS, the Lectro ZTT/Plus
(Zero Transfer Time) uninterruptible power system within
Europe. Containing a state-of-the-art microprocessor and
robust transformer, the Lectro ZTT/Plus UPS provides
increased reliability, enhanced user interface and improved
overload capabilities for cable and broadband networks.

"The introduction of the Lectro ZTT/Plus into the British
and Irish market by MPL Powerware Systems is another example
of Exide Electronics' commitment to advancing CATV power
protection. This is the first product to benefit from Exide
Electronics' acquisition of Lectro Products and the merging
of technological talent," said Rick Marcotte, director of
sales and marketing for Exide Electronics' Communications
Systems Group.

"We have significantly increased the reliability of the
Lectro ZTT/Plus while ensuring the equipment maintains its
reputation for easy serviceability. The technician friendly
design offers the European Cable market a CATV UPS that is
truly excellent value," explained Kevin O'Hare, European
sales manager for the Communications Systems Group.

The technology found in the Lectro ZTT/Plus along with its
competitive price will help multiple system operators (MSO)
reduce initial and long-term costs. The Lectro ZTT/Plus is
currently being evaluated for the necessary certification of
conformity to all the relevant European specifications and
standards normally associated with this type of product. It
is envisaged that several different European compliant 60V
versions of the Lectro ZTT/Plus UPS will be available in
mid-October.

At the heart of the Lectro ZTT/Plus is a digital
microprocessor that increases network reliability by
enabling smarter functions, such as improved brownout
detection. Through the use of an LCD (liquid crystal
display) panel and digital controls, the Lectro ZTT/Plus
offers CATV providers new levels of performance, greater
reliability and excellent value. Technician service and
maintenance time is reduced because the Lectro ZTT/Plus is
true digital root mean square measurement (RMS) ready.
Technicians no longer have to use hand-held meters and
perform calculations to obtain critical information since
the integrated LCD screen can scroll through pre-calculated
data at the touch of a button, providing such information as
input/output voltage, time on battery, output current and
battery voltage.

The Lectro ZTT/Plus' "battery-friendly" charging topology
maximises battery life by adjusting charging levels
according to environmental conditions.Battery life is also
increased due to faster charging without the harmful effects
of overcharging. Extended battery life reduces replacement
costs and provides MSOs with long-term cost savings over the
life of the Lectro ZTT/Plus.

The enhanced ferroresonant transformer helps prevent network
outages by handling short-term overloads of over 300 percent
at 60 VAC. Additional current can be delivered to
accommodate temporary overloads or short circuits without
collapsing the output voltage. By combining the rugged
transformer with advanced control algorithms in the
microprocessor, the unit acts as a maintenance-free "virtual
fuse." Expensive network components are protected against
sustained overload conditions while accommodating short
duration, high current demands to minimise nuisance outages.

In addition, the status monitoring port on the Lectro
ZTT/Plus interfaces directly to the latest transponders from
Cheetah and AM Communications. This eliminates the need for
a stand-alone status monitoring interface device, providing
additional cost savings for MSOs.
