Pelham Sloane is launching its new PS1500 all-in-one ‘screenback’ computer into the new homes market, particularly focusing on home automation applications.

The technology for home automation has been in existence for a number of years. It is being widely adopted in North America, where over 40 per cent of new homes have some level of automation installed, ranging from multi-room audio/visual and IT distribution, through to full integration of audio/visual, HVAC, security and other control systems, with Internet interface to allow remote control. With web-enabled handheld computers or mobiles, users are able to check security CCTV pictures, switch on lights, turn up the heating, close blinds and curtains, and even switch on the sauna or deactivate the security system for a visitor.

Saugatuck Technology Inc, a strategic IT consultancy, identifies the home automation market as currently being worth £1.7 billion each year, with growth expected to range between 10% and 35% annually over the next five years.

The lack of understanding in the UK of what technology is available and what is possible, coupled with a general resistance from many housebuilders to install even the infrastructure, has meant that home automation has been slow to take off in this country.

“As market awareness increases, the level of technology adoption currently in the US will become prevalent in the UK,” said John Jensen, chairman of Pelham Sloane.

“We are looking to form a number of strategic alliances with home automation suppliers and integrators in the UK. In the US, where the market is more mature, we are in advanced negotiations with a number of such companies.”

“Pelham Sloane is well positioned to take advantage of these growing markets,” said Bruce Guptill, Managing Director, Research Services of Saugatuck Technology, Inc. “The unique features and benefits of the PS1500 make it well suited to the needs of the markets Pelham Sloane is addressing with its reseller programme.”

Pelham Sloane is offering partners the opportunity to sell the PS1500 at various levels and through co-operative marketing and sales programmes. “Our reseller programme is designed to support our partners’ growth. Our tailored marketing and sales programme targets those applications where the PS1500 offers unique advantages,” said Ursula Ferguson, director of marketing for Pelham Sloane. “We will provide our resellers with a combination of marketing help, technical support and on-line training in concert with rebates and other incentives. The total programme is aimed at rapidly growing the home automation market where the PS1500 represents a unique solution.”

Slim and elegant, the PS1500 is a powerful computer integrated in to a flat-panel monitor measuring only 2¾” in depth. Perfect for locations where space is at a premium, it is the ideal centrepiece for today’s automated home.

Manufactured in the United Kingdom, the PS1500 is capable of supporting a wide range of home applications including entertainment, small business and home automation.

The PS1500 is offered in several standard configurations starting at £1050. It delivers maximum speed and memory for virtually any business or consumer purpose. Pelham Sloane also offers custom build-to-order solutions. The PS1500 offers a wide range of options including touch screen, wireless keyboard and mouse, WiFi (802.11 networking), a TV tuner card, wall and arm mounts, and a custom designed mobile desk. It is available with the MicrosoftÒ WindowsÒ XP Professional™ operating system.

The PS1500 is an Innovations 2004 Design and Engineering Showcase winner in the Computer Hardware category at the 2004 Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Pelham Sloane is based in London, England, with its US headquarters in Southport, Connecticut.
