23 September 2004 – London – Next Generation Security Software limited (NGS) today releases an authoritative, vendor-neutral, study into attack vectors exploited by Phishers for identity theft and financial fraud.

Professional criminals are using phishing scams to steal customer electronic identities and commit financial fraud. In the face of escalating sophistication in phishing attacks, businesses need to take a proactive approach in their security if they are to adequately protect their customers from becoming victims.

Over the last year NGS have worked closely with their international clientele to secure them against today’s complex threats. Many of these organisations have found it necessary to adopt specific anti-phishing solutions to protect their own customers from succumbing to the deceptive tricks in common use.

Assessment of these critical web-based applications in the last twelve months has revealed that over 90% initially contained trivial security or logic flaws that could be easily abused in phishing attacks. Going one step further, approximately 30% of these vulnerable applications could also be coaxed into surrendering volumes of confidential customer information from their normally non-visible backend databases.

To help combat the global phishing threat, NGS have made publicly available a comprehensive whitepaper that explains the techniques used in successful phishing scams, and provides real protection advice for business. The whitepaper details the different attack vectors exploited by Phishers, and offers technical advice for securing against the threat at the client-side, server-side and enterprise levels.

“There is so little vendor-neutral technical information about modern phishing threats. We were surprised at how naive many businesses are, and how poorly prepared they were for responding against phishing attacks targeting their own customers” observed Gunter Ollmann, professional services director at NGS.

The new whitepaper “The Phishing Guide” can be downloaded from:
