With around 2.2 million teleworkers currently operational in the UK and one third of the workforce forecast to be working from their homes by 2006*, the time is right for organisations to start sourcing appropriate enabling technology. The urgency to do so is increased by the fact that employees’ "right to request flexible work" is now established in UK law**.

Broadband is at the core of an effective teleworking solution. Companies also require flexible administration procedures when ordering and managing multiple connections. Leading athletic sportswear brand Nike, for example, was receiving a separate monthly bill for each user from its previous broadband supplier, which made the task of checking through them arduous and often inaccurate. In addition, these bills frequently arrived late, meaning they missed the company’s standard payment run, which necessitated extra administrative work.

applica, a leading provider of broadband solutions for businesses, has developed its Applica Broadband Administration System (ABAS) to counteract common administration problems linked to teleworker connections, such as those experienced by Nike. The first of its kind in the marketplace, ABAS has the flexibility to meet customers’ individual needs, providing them with a system for monitoring multiple orders - including the production of one bill for multiple lines – to view order status, report faults and track progress, plus add new connections via XML or Excel.

Simon Smith, CEO at applica broadband, says: “We developed ABAS in direct response to customer demand, as many were left frustrated by the complex billing associated with setting up broadband for multiple teleworkers. As in the case of Nike, we ensure our solutions are compliant with both the business and technology strategies for each customer, to facilitate a reliable broadband service for every teleworker, coupled with straightforward administrative processes. In this way, we are helping to increase the client’s overall business efficiency.”

applica broadband’s ABAS system facilitates the following deliverables on a corporate level:
• To get one invoice each month, which includes all the connection charges rather than separate bills for each user
• To add new orders in bulk through XML or Excel
• For orders and technical issues to be resolved within the expected timescales
• To track orders in the provisioning process
• To view the case history of technical issues raised
• To modify existing orders i.e. upgrade or downgrade bandwidth
• To have a flexible short term contract, that caters for staff changes, i.e. sales staff moving premises or leaving the company.

Notes to editors:

*These figures are taken from Labour Market Trends, published by National Statistics, June 2002 and October 2002 editions, which defines ‘teleworkers’ as ‘people who work at home at least one day per week’.

** As reported by the Institute for Employment Studies in July 2003: "On 6 April 2003, the government introduced an important new legal duty on employers to consider applications for flexible working from parents of young (under six) or disabled children".
