Figleaves, the world’s largest online retailer of branded intimate apparel, today announced that it had doubled the peak capacity of its website and made dramatic savings in hardware investment as a direct result of implementing Redline Networks’ T|X Web Acceleration product. Figleaves purchased two Redline appliances as part of an ongoing initiative to increase uptime and maintain high standards of performance on its website for its burgeoning customer base, which is currently in excess of 380,000.

Following a thorough evaluation of products available in the marketplace, the company purchased two T|X Web Acceleration units from Redline Networks. The product, which accelerates, secures and improves website performance is already being utilised by many of the world's premier high-traffic public websites.

“The improvement that the Redline T|X products made was as dramatic as it was immediate. As soon as we deployed the Redlines, we removed the need for software based compression at the web servers and offloaded the overhead required in creating and tearing down SSL connections and the lower level TCP/IP connections - the increase in the website capacity was remarkable,” said Michael Devlin, Website and Security Manager at Figleaves. “It more than doubled our peak load capacity. To put this in real terms, without the T|X we would have had to buy at least half as many web servers again to get us through the 2004 Christmas rush. This won’t now be necessary and we have also gained considerably more breathing space."

Another key benefit was that the Redline boxes enabled Devlin and his team to manipulate users’ requests before they hit the web server. “In the past, any external broken links or bad requests had to be fixed or cleansed from within the web application, which often translated into development and testing time before deployment. The Redline boxes now allow us to fix these requests on the fly within minutes of them being highlighted."

The Redline products also provide Figleaves with a more robust and reliable level of failover and resilience for the web layer. “In the past this was handled via a software-based solution, but this method was prone to problems, as it was necessary to rely on the servers themselves to decide if they were healthy. Redline’s T|Xs now give a level of resilience that the software solution was never able to provide,” concluded Devlin.

“Redline Networks understands that better performance means better business,” said Paul Gracie, EMEA Sales Director at Redline Networks. “We recognise that it is essential for large, successful e-tailers such as Figleaves to maintain the high performance of their sites, even during peak periods. Our T|X appliance is designed to improve site performance, increase site capacity and reduce costs by eliminating fundamental network and server inefficiencies. The appliance also causes minimum disruption to implement – it can be installed in less than an hour without interrupting site traffic, reconfiguring servers, installing and testing software, or modifying content.”
