Ingham Insurance Experiences Immediate Decrease in Spam Scourge with Award-winning Spam Appliance

Basingstoke, UK, Oct 14, 2004 – Barracuda Networks, Inc., the leading provider of enterprise-class spam firewall solutions, today announced that the Barracuda Spam Firewall has helped Ingham & Co (Liabilities) Ltd, an insurance underwriter operating in the Midlands and North of England, to successfully eliminate spam and viruses from its corporate email servers. Prior to deploying the Barracuda Spam Firewall 300, Inghams was flooded by as much as 323,000 spam messages a day putting its servers in danger of collapse and wasting countless hours of personnel time.

“Spam was overwhelming our technical engineering staff,” said David Ingham, managing director. “Most of their time spent each day was focused on deleting spam and protecting the network from other threats rather than on system development to keep our business thriving and moving forward.”

Inghams realised they needed an effective anti-spam solution and fast. They looked at several leading software solutions, but ultimately selected a Barracuda Spam Firewall from Yarm Computers, a Cleveland-based reseller, because it offered a cost effective solution to a very expensive problem.

“At its peak our spam problem was costing us £1000 a week in IT support alone as we fought to keep our Exchange server up and running,” continued Ingham. “We compared a number of software solutions with hardware and eventually decided that Barracuda Networks offered the most cost effective solution. Not only is the Barracuda Spam Firewall providing a rapid return on investment but it has also improved the quality of life for everyone in the company.”

The majority of spam dropped off immediately following full deployment of the two Barracuda Spam Firewall 300 models on the network. Inghams further reduced the remaining spam by utilizing the appliance’s per-user functionality and capabilities such as the Outlook plug-in which allows Inghams’ personnel to determine spam from legitimate email according to their individual email preferences and requirements.

“There is no blanket solution to fighting spam,” said Paul Thackeray, EMEA managing director of Barracuda Networks. “One of the main benefits of the Barracuda Spam Firewall is that it’s architecture leverages a cocktail of the best available spam fighting techniques all in one fairly priced and easy to manage solution. Ingham Insurance, as well as thousands of other customers worldwide, are easily taking charge of their email networks again.”

The Barracuda Spam Firewall is available in four models and supports from 1,000 to 25,000 active users with no per user licensing fees. The Barracuda Spam Firewall can be installed in front of the email server in typically less than five minutes and is automatically updated hourly to block new forms of spam and viruses. Its architecture leverages open source spam and virus solutions in conjunction with ten defence layers: denial of service and security protection, IP block list, rate control, virus check with archive decompression, proprietary virus check, user specified rules, spam fingerprint check, intention analysis, spam rule-based scoring, and Bayesian analysis. This architecture minimises the processing of each email, which yields the performance required to process millions of messages per day. Unlike software solutions, the Barracuda Spam Firewall reduces the load placed on the email server by off-loading both spam and virus filtering. Barracuda Networks also o
ffers the Energize Update subscription service to automatically update the Barracuda Spam Firewall with the latest spam rules and virus definitions.
