22nd October 2004 -The first stage of judging for the BETT Awards 2005 (www.bettawards.co.uk) is completed and the shortlist has been announced. The BETT Awards programme is renowned across the world for setting the standards in educational Information Communications Technology (ICT), and a record number of educational innovators and suppliers submitted entries for the 2005 programme.

Now in their 6th year, the BETT Awards are focused on identifying innovative hardware, software and online resources that help teachers integrate technology into their everyday classroom practice. Once again, the level of entries was consistently high from both major educational suppliers and the smaller, specialist educational firms.

Charles Clarke, Secretary of State for Education, last year set the BETT Awards a challenge to identify exemplar products in specific subjects at key stages, and to improve their effective use. In response, this year sees the introduction of six new award categories covering English, Maths and Science at both primary and secondary levels.

The Awards, one of the major highlights of the BETT 2005 education technology show (12-15 January 2005, Olympia, London, www.bettshow.co.uk), are run by EMAP Education, in association with the British Educational Suppliers Association (BESA), EC&T magazine and the British Educational Communications Technology Agency (Becta).

Ray Barker, Director of BESA and Joint Chair of the Judges, comments: "The BETT Awards provide that much needed link between the ICT industry and the teaching community. The BETT Awards also play a key role in demonstrating how ICT can be embedded into subjects across the curriculum. The year-on-year rise in entries illustrates how important the BETT Awards have become in the eyes of teachers and suppliers alike."

The BETT Awards' judges are independently selected and are made up of educational professionals, including representatives from many influential organisations such as the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) and NAACE. The winner of each category will be announced at the BETT Awards 2005 dinner, which will be held at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London, on the evening of Tuesday 11th January 2005.
