CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – November 3, 2004 – Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the global leader of distributed computing solutions and services, today announced that its EdgeComputing service was awarded ‘Business Software Product of the Year’ as part of the “Computing Awards for Excellence 2004,” hosted by Computing. The winners were announced at the Computing Awards Gala Dinner held last week at Battersea Park Arena in London.

Now in their 12th year, the “Computing Awards for Excellence” are regarded as the most prestigious and sought after industry accolade in the UK technology sector. The Awards are judged by an independent panel of highly respected individuals and experts from within and outside the IT industry. The awards are generally recognized as the benchmark for excellence throughout the computing industry.

The Akamai EdgeComputing service, selected from over 100 entrants in the Business Software Product of the Year category, won the award for its creativity, innovation, and ability to solve complex business problems. Early adopter customers, including Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, contributed to Akamai’s nomination and quantified the return on investment of EdgeComputing to their online business, including the benefits of expanded global reach, faster time to market for new Web applications, and reduced e-business costs.

The EdgeComputing service has helped Sony Ericsson differentiate its business and drive site-to-store traffic through a high quality online customer experience. Mats Frisk, Core Application Architect, Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, said: “It's of critical importance to Sony Ericsson to leverage the Internet’s reach and economies of scale to enhance existing business processes and uncover new opportunities. EdgeComputing allows us to deploy applications that meet our requirements for 24/7, global business operations. For example, we’re now able to show potential customers, accessing our site from anywhere in the world, where to find the closest Sony Ericsson dealer.”

Akamai EdgeComputing is an on demand, managed service to enable the rapid deployment of Internet applications. Using Akamai’s globally distributed platform, enterprise applications scale instantly, perform predictably, and overcome the functionality limitations that exist in centralized deployments. EdgeComputing offers enterprises a flexible pay-per-use computing model that drives IT efficiencies to new levels while allowing innovation not possible with fixed asset deployments.

Carlos Ramon, Vice President of Sales and General Manager, International at Akamai, said: “We are honoured to have won this prestigious IT award. Several European enterprises have embraced the Akamai EdgeComputing service to bring Web applications to market more quickly and at lower cost than possible with ordinary centralized infrastructure. It is these early adopter customers, like Sony Ericsson, along with our customer delivery teams that have enabled us to gain strong market momentum for EdgeComputing across Europe.”
