Teleca and partner WSI form TDD Design Center to reduce time-to-market for mobile broadband voice and data devices
SAN BRUNO, CA - November 10, 2004 - Teleca and IPWireless today announced a partnership to accelerate the introduction of a range of new UMTS TDD voice and data devices being demanded by operators globally. Teleca, a world leader in user equipment research and development, will partner with Sweden's Wireless System Integration (WSI) to form the TDD Design Center (TDC), a solution center dedicated to the development of new UMTS TDD devices, such as handsets, personal mobile access points, and networked music players. IPWireless has licensed technology to Teleca to enable it to develop and enhance UMTS TDD devices for manufacturing partners.
Teleca's TDC is dedicated to the development of next generation UMTS TDD devices. Leveraging Teleca's proven software and hardware platforms and development models will enable device manufacturers to introduce new UMTS TDD-enabled devices within a shorter timeframe, with lowered research and development costs and superior service and support. Teleca's software and technology are already found in hundreds of millions of mobile phones worldwide. WSI, an expert in the design of UMTS TDD device antenna systems, will also bring its years of experience with UMTS TDD to the TDC.
"The market for UMTS TDD is rapidly expanding and the need for effective development of new mobile broadband devices based on this exciting technology is readily apparent," said Markus Enholm, vice president at Teleca System Design and head of the TDD Design Center. "We look forward to working with IPWireless, operators and manufacturers to expand the UMTS TDD ecosystem as quickly as possible and help operators deliver the mobile broadband services their customers want."
Teleca will provide all services and support related to UMTS TDD device development, a reference test center, and will facilitate worldwide UMTS TDD business development. Given Teleca's existing relationships with many leading operators and device manufacturers, the company is also well positioned to integrate UMTS TDD capabilities into existing handsets and other user equipment. The first anticipated devices to go into the TDC include an integrated UMTS TDD/802.11/Bluetooth 'Personal Mobile Access Point,' a slim, battery-powered, pocket size device that allows users to create their own mobile "hotspot" using UMTS TDD as backhaul, as well as a range of voice over IP and broadband gateways.
"Operators, device manufacturers and consumers will all benefit from Teleca's formation of the TDD Design Center," said Chris Gilbert, chief executive officer, IPWireless. "I am confident that Teleca's industry-leading device and system development capabilities combined with its global presence will result in a range of exciting new devices for consumers and increase the value of our operator's UMTS TDD networks."
