Research shows 84% of businesses experience unplanned email outage, each averaging 6 hours

London, UK – 10th November 2004 – Businesses seeking to mitigate the risk of an unanticipated disruption of their email flow will gain a new incentive today. BorderWare Technologies Inc., the benchmark provider of messaging security solutions, announces "MXtreme High Availability Load Optimization Cluster", a series of multi-unit offerings of the company's market-leading email firewall solutions, which are regarded as the industry's most comprehensive high-availability email gateways. Effective immediately, organisations can save up to twenty-five percent on the purchase of a pair of systems across the full range of MXtreme models configured for high-availability with built-in anti-spam and anti-virus. The offerings are available from more than 500 MXFusion resellers worldwide.

MXtreme High Availability Load Optimization is a failsafe clustering architecture for high-availability that allows two or more MXtreme appliances to act as a single logical unit for processing email messages. It supports high-availability through its unique security, cluster management, load balancing and optimization, and patent-pending "stateful failover" capabilities. A cluster of two or more MXtreme appliances allows the messages in the queue of one system to be "mirrored" onto another system, ensuring that no email is lost in the event that one system fails.

Businesses Short on Continuity for Email
A recent study conducted by Osterman Research found that 84% of businesses had experienced an unplanned email outage that averaged almost 6 hours. The study found examples of much longer outages: a hospital with 3,200 employees was without email for 72 hours in their most recent outage; a technology consulting company with 1,100 employees was without email for 36 hours in their most recent outage. The study also found that more than one-third of the companies that had experienced unplanned outages still had not created a high-availability contingency plan for email. In addition to continuity, MXtreme customers’ report that their MTA and security management costs were reduced an average of 60%.

"Our organisation is growing ever more reliant on email for critical communications, so we want to ensure that our infrastructure is designed to withstand the unexpected," said Kevin Hutchinson, Vice President, The Co-operators Group Limited. "The High Availability Load Optimization features of MXtreme provide the added reliability and security that we need."

"We've seen a growing trend among customers that make an initial purchase and come back to us for additional systems within a short period. The MXtreme HALO Cluster offering recognizes the trend, and encourages businesses to make a multi-unit purchase from the outset," said John Alsop, CEO, BorderWare.
