Newark, UK – November 11, 2004 – AVG UK, the official business partner of Grisoft and the AVG Anti-Virus family of software products for the UK & Ireland, today announced the release of a completely updated and improved AVG Free version of the industry leading AVG Anti-Virus software.

“After five years and some 20 million free downloads we felt the time was right to release a new version of our Free Edition of AVG to allow consumers to benefit from the considerable improvements and additional benefits we have developed for our software,” said Michael Foreman, partner at AVG UK. “The new AVG Free has received a lot of positive endorsement already among the many testers who participated in our beta programme.”

The updated AVG Free Edition has been substantially redesigned and engineered to provide extensive improvements to the user interface and software capabilities. The result is a powerful consumer anti-virus solution that is easy to install and use. At the same time traditional disruptions associated with anti-virus software such as having to reboot after every update, adjust email settings or endure dial-up delays brought on by large update files have been eliminated.

Among the new features in the latest AVG Free Edition are:

§ An improved scanning engine that supports the rapid implementation of new detection techniques.

§ The new user interface is designed to improve user satisfaction and ease of use.

§ Support available through the AVG Free Online Services, which include a User Forum, Virus Encyclopaedia and FAQ section

§ Classification of updates according to their importance into three different levels - priority, recommended and optional.

Apart from supporting individual e-mail clients through program plug-ins (for example The Bat, MS Outlook 95/97/2000/XP and so on), significant new protection for e-mail clients has been added. The Personal E-mail Scanner - AVG Email Management Server (EMS) which supports SMTP and POP3 e-mail clients - can be set up automatically during installation.

Existing users will receive an email alert asking them to upgrade to the new version of AVG Free because their current version is due to expire. Both versions will be maintained for a period of around eight weeks to allow users plenty of time to download and install the updated version.

The new AVG Free Edition is available immediately. AVG Free, as well as the more powerful AVG 7.0 Professional Edition, can be downloaded directly from the AVG UK web site at:

About AVG Anti-Virus

AVG Anti-Virus software shields computers from viruses, trojans horses and worms with a multi-layer approach that is more comprehensive than most protection programs. Following extensive pre-processing to scan data for patterns of virus code, AVG moves on to examine files using generic detection to root out new strains or variants of known viruses. Two levels of heuristic analysis are performed – dynamic and static. The dynamic level uses code emulation to evaluate in a secure virtual environment the behaviour of the program or file being tested. Static heuristic analysis locates programming code associated with certain types of virus propagation. AVG then performs an integrity check. Certain data associated with each scanned file is stored in its internal integrity database and used to heal infected files, potentially restoring information, which may have been lost during infection. AVG supports all Windows operating systems, from Windows 95 through the latest version of Win
dows XP, and provides users with extremely fast and efficient database updates to meet the latest viral threats.
