Bored with your office life and wishing you could get a fresh start with your own business? While the challenge might be daunting it might not be as difficult as you think.

Back in 1995, Christine Dimmick, founder of Good Home Co, was tired of office work life and hated her job. At 25 she was ready for something new. A creative mind she loved decorating and inventing new ways of reusing everyday items.

She took up a new hobby of making her own body products and cosmetics. In her kitchen, she combined her love of cooking and nature and started coming up with her own recipes to create body and homecare products. Clever packaging helped her products stand out. She found inspiration with simple items such as lemonade bottles that she reused to transform into beautiful laundry softener.

Friends and family were so enthusiastic that Christine soon realized that maybe she could try to sell her products to stores. She approached 3 shops in New York and soon found herself with orders.

Realizing she had a business on her hands while still working her day job, she worked hard to fill those orders, decided to sign up for evening classes to gain some business acumen and officially registered the Good Home company.

However boring your job might be, it takes determination and finances to leave it behind and start your own business. Determination Christine had and a Christmas bonus of $5000 provided the finances she needed. She quit her job within 2 months and has never looked back ever since. Positive word of mouth enabled the business to grow. Her stepfather came to help her a year later. They started to attend tradeshows and the response was soon overwhelming. First filling orders by hand, Christine soon had to work with a manufacturer to be able to keep up with the demand.

8 years later Good Home Co. is now a $4 Million business (from $30000 in 1995). The company sells products in the US and around the world. It has also been a great success in the UK. The range today includes a full line of natural cleaning and laundry products. Though the company has grown, fragrances and products are still developed by Christine as they always have been. “We’ve gotten so much bigger that I feel legitimized about what I do” says Christine. “It’s not just a weekend hobby anymore”.
