Broadband ISPs Equipped with Sharper Competitive Edge as DSL Market Moves On

Westell Brings Touch-Free Provisioning and Advanced Broadband Support to European Broadband Market

Basingstoke, UK – 22nd November 2004: Westell Technologies (NASDAQ: WSTL) launched an intensified effort on the European broadband market today, challenging ISPs and consumers alike to ‘expect more from broadband’. As part of its expansion strategy Westell is promising simpler service provisioning for ISPs, and the ability to keep pace with the next generation of value-added applications and new broadband devices expected in 2005 and beyond.

David McKeigue, managing director at Westell Ltd commented: “Westell’s largest customers, including the major US RBOCs, have been asking for touch-free provisioning and better remote support on multi-vendor home and small office ADSL gear. In our EnVoy™ Service Management System, Westell has developed the first and the best example of such a technology.”

The highlights of the EnVoy feature set includes auto-enabling of newly connected customer premise equipment e.g. routers, modems, gateways, upload of new configurations in support of new services, diagnostics and scheduled software audits and upgrades. The features apply to any make of equipment that complies with the DSL Forum’s TR-069 report for remote CPE management.

The most obvious benefits of EnVoy to ISPs are the ability to reduce customer service calls and support costs on basic broadband services, and to enable the cost-effective deployment and support of more sophisticated home and small office equipment and applications such as voice and video.

“With industry adherence to the TR-069 standard, future deployments of next-generation services are likely to see ISPs taking advantage of multi-vendor interoperability to provision other models and makes of CPE,” added McKeigue. “The would overcome the biggest technical barrier currently preventing broadband users from switching service providers, which would ultimately benefit all parties concerned as it does in other competitive industries.”

The market in Europe is showing signs of the much-anticipated move from a simple broadband modem connection to the use of home gateways and non-PC ‘home hubs’ controlling voice, Internet and video services. ISPs could see more expensive support costs as users demand more feature rich devices. ISPs need to have management systems such as EnVoy to support this intelligent customer equipment.

In the US, Westell enjoys a leadership position in the DSL CPE market, maintained against stiff competition from the Far East. Once again, the company competes by enabling ISPs and end-users to ‘demand more from broadband’. Westell CPE is consistently rated as ‘most reliable’ and ‘best performing’ by its customers in the most demanding broadband applications, for instance online gaming and on-demand television. With even the newest broadband devices with speeds such as ADSL2+ remotely manageable, EnVoy offers forward and backward compatibility. Unique router and gateway feature sets targeting applications like VoIP and VPNs completes a unique offering.
