'Do they know it's Christmas?' has become the biggest digital music download ever, it was announced today. Rainier PR handled the online launch for 7 Digital Media, the company behind the official download version of Band Aid 20's song.

The original Band Aid version of 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' was recorded in London on November 25, 1984, and rush-released as a seven-inch vinyl single on December 7. It entered the U.K. chart at No. 1 on December 15, and stayed there for five weeks, selling more than three million copies.

Twenty years on, UK performers gathered to record a new version of 'Do They Know It's Christmas' to help fight famine in Africa. The final line up of artists reads like a who's who of contemporary British Rock, Pop, R n B and Urban Music, with Midge Ure producing once again.

The new recording of 'Do They Know It's Christmas' on Mercury Records, written by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure, will be in the shops from today, with all proceeds from the single going to The Band Aid Trust.

"With the track being available for download we're able to raise tens of thousands of pounds for the children of Africa even before a single CD is sold", said Ben Drury, Managing Director of 7 Digital Media, the company behind the official download version of Do They Know It's Christmas, which went live at last week. "And with Rainier PR's help we're able to spread the good news and attract even more people to support this charitable cause."

The Band Aid 20 track can be downloaded for £1.49 with a special bundle including the original for £1.99. The video is also available for download at £2.50. There is also a link to pre-order the CD or make a donation to the Band Aid Trust.
