Newark, UK – 8 December, 2004 – AVG UK, the official business partner of Grisoft and the AVG Anti-Virus family of software products for the UK & Ireland, today announced a number of enhancements to its flagship AVG Network Edition software, which provides network anti-virus protection and management for small-to-medium sized enterprise (SME) networks.

“To compete effectively in the fast moving, continually changing world of anti-virus it is important that we demonstrate to our Channel and our customers our commitment to constantly updating and refining our offering,” said Michael Foreman, partner at AVG UK. “Today’s enhancements to AVG Network Edition a send a clear message that we intend to be at the forefront of the anti-virus market with a sophisticated, yet value-oriented solution for the SME market.”

Chief among the improvements are new basic and advanced interfaces for AVGADMIN, the central administration tool that allows administrators to manage remotely all workstations and file servers on the network. The basic interface is now much cleaner making administration and management tasks much easier to perform. For configuring and viewing the network in greater detail an administrator can also select an advanced interface. The advanced interface is designed to be used by managers of larger networks who need to access the anti-virus systems of individual workstations for more detailed viewing of the workstation data and configuring.

Today’s other enhancements are the ability to save workstation and user settings as shared objects, greater refinement of reporting, support for Microsoft SQL Server, database installation wizard and workstation error status definition.

Workstation error status definition – this means administrators can set the conditions - out of date virus database, older version of AVG Anti-Virus, virus detection and so on - that trigger error reports from individual workstations. This ensures administrators receive accurate and timely information regarding workstation vulnerabilities in the network to enable them to take pre-emptive action and so maintain a high level of data protection.

Shared objects - workstation and user settings can now be saved as shared objects to the AVG DataCenter, a database containing all configuration and task settings. By saving these settings just once in the DataCenter this greatly reduces the amount of data in the database. Moreover, it helps keep anti-virus protection policies uniform across the whole network.

Greater reporting refinement - administrators of large computer networks often have difficulty identifying problem areas when faced with the event logs of hundreds of workstation. The new filtering process cuts down the amount of records displayed in accordance with parameters defined by the administrators themselves. This allows them to concentrate only on those which require immediate attention.

Support for Microsoft SQL Server – support for Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) has been added to the AVG TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) server which allows AVG DataCenter to be installed on various database machines. This means it is now possible to use Microsoft SQL Server and the Microsoft Desktop Engine (MSDE) variant. The advantage of this is that AVG Remote Administration can be extended into large networks with hundreds or even thousands of clients.

Database installation wizard – Configuring the AVG DataCenter is now possible with help of special wizard, making the whole process significantly easier and faster.

AVG Network Edition, provides network anti-virus protection and management for up to 500 network users. This may be extended to support 1000s of users through the deployment of additional database servers. At the heart of the AVG solution is the AVG DataCenter, a database containing all configuration and task settings. Remote management of all workstations and file servers on the network is made possible through AVGADMIN, a central administration tool. The system is kept updated automatically at regular intervals by a worldwide network of 15,000 high speed servers. Additional priority updates are issued whenever a major new virus is detected on the Internet.

Pricing for AVG Network Edition starts from £84 for a two-year five-user licence. The number of licences is determined by the total of network workstations and file servers combined.

About AVG Anti-Virus
AVG Anti-Virus software shields computers from viruses, trojans horses and worms with a multi-layer approach that is more comprehensive than most protection programs. Following extensive pre-processing to scan data for patterns of virus code, AVG moves on to examine files using generic detection to root out new strains or variants of known viruses. Two levels of heuristic analysis are performed – dynamic and static. The dynamic level uses code emulation to evaluate in a secure virtual environment the behaviour of the program or file being tested. Static heuristic analysis locates programming code associated with certain types of virus propagation. AVG then performs an integrity check. Certain data associated with each scanned file is stored in its internal integrity database and used to heal infected files, potentially restoring information, which may have been lost during infection. AVG supports all Windows operating systems, from Windows 95 through the latest version of Win
dows XP, and provides users with extremely fast and efficient database updates to meet the latest viral threats.
