A new search engine product has been developed specifically for the public sector by System Associates, specialists in the delivery of cost-effective, enterprise-wide Internet technologies.

g-Seek, version 1.0 aims to fill a current void within the public sector. According to David Macken, managing director of System Associates, “There is a relatively untapped demand, within the public sector, for an effective stand-alone search engine that can be tailored to address many of the compliance issues affecting e-Government.“

With a considerable track record within the public sector, System Associates has been providing powerful search facilities within its Internet solutions for many years. It has now formalised this knowledge into a search engine framework that can be tailored to individual sites and portals.

g-Seek is highly adaptable. It is capable of searching an unlimited volume of information and retrieves relevant information very quickly. Based upon the Lucene search engine (a Java-based, open source application) this solution supports the Government’s call to encourage the use of open source software, so that organisations are not tied into proprietary software solutions. It is also highly flexible to accommodate the frequent changes in government standards.

To ensure g-Seek continues to operate effectively for its customers and their future requirements, System Associates will also offer ongoing fine-tuning by highly qualified system engineers. David Macken comments: “Most companies that develop a site’s search engine do so and then walk away. System Associates offers a fine-tuning service where our engineers regularly audit the effectiveness of our customer’s search facility to ensure that it is continually operating to maximum efficiency.“

g-Seek is very intuitive and will intelligently rank search results by the frequency of views, as well ranking by the more usual keywords, category, relevance, and date. Standard features of g-Seek include: searching across metadata, content and database content; built-in government Metadata standards, incremental indexing, search support for a variety of content types including PDFs and MS office files, HTTPS support, recognition and tagging for 37 languages, search by phrase, wildcards, auto-Boolean, phonetics and stemming.
