12 January, 2004 - Mindjet® UK today warned that British headteachers and governors who now have to ensure that school information management complies with the new Freedom of Information Act will struggle to do so because of the sheer complexity of the task.

The Freedom of Information (FoI) Act 2000 came into force on 1 January and a Government checklist for steps that should be taken to ensure schools comply with the new regulations has been made public.

However Mindjet, a leading provider of software for visualisation and managing information, believes that the action required to comply with each point on the checklist poses a significant information management burden for headteachers and governors. The full checklist can be seen at

The FoI was introduced to promote greater openness and accountability across the UK public sector. Every school is required to develop a publication scheme concerning pupil data as any individual now has the legal right to ask to have access to information held by that school.

“The information compliance complexities of the FoI present headteachers and school governors with a sizeable headache,” said Peter Bragg, country manager for Mindjet UK. “They now have to clearly structure how relevant digital information is kept on file and more importantly a number of clear but potentially complex processes have to be introduced to allow them to deal with every personal information request.

“For example, deciding whether an information request is beyond the bounds of public interest is a legally sensitive decision, but schools will not be able to do so with confidence unless they can view all of the relevant information quickly and know where all of it resides. Software that allows this information to be visualised clearly and simply is needed so that schools can avoid these pitfalls,” said Mr Bragg.

Mindjet’s MindManager® software enables individuals to capture, organise and quickly share the unstructured information typical of project work, enabling teams and individuals to work smarter and faster.
