(It’s called a healthy immune system)

We all know vitamin C plays a vital role in the maintenance of a healthy immune system, our natural defence against colds and flu. However, with the U.K. vitamin C market now worth over 28 million pounds, consisting of literally hundreds of brands, there is an increasingly difficult purchasing decision for the consumer.

Ester-C is a unique, non acidic form of vitamin C, which also contains natural metabolites to aid absorption. This non acidity means Ester-C can be taken in higher dosages, without causing digestive disruption, a particularly useful trait during the colds and flu season.

Recent research indicates that supplementing with Ester-C reduces the severity of symptoms and shortens the duration of the common cold. Trial participants reported significantly fewer colds than the placebo group. The average length of full cold symptoms suffered was 42% less and re-infection was 20% lower.

Dr Sarah Brewer:

‘ By taking vitamin C daily you can reduce a colds duration by nearly a quarter , so you could bounce back from a cold in only a few days, instead of suffering for longer. In addition, vitamin C can lessen your chance of catching a cold, in the first place, by a third ’.

Dr Brewer recommends: ‘If symptoms do occur:

• Take 2g Ester-C immediately, and then 1g every four hours until symptoms subside
• Once symptoms improve, reduce the dose to 1g Ester-C, three times a day
• Once you are well supplement a healthy diet with 1g of Ester-C daily to help maintain good immunity’.

Ester-C is available from Boots, Holland & Barrett, GNC, good independent health stores and selected pharmacies. Prices range form approximately £5.25 to £12 for 30 or 60 500mg tablets.
