London, 7 February, 2005 - Arbor Networks®, a leader in network integrity systems, today announced that COLT, the Tier 1 European provider of business communication services, has chosen Arbor Networks’ Peakflow® SP for traffic planning and to protect its customers across Europe from distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks.

COLT is using Arbor’s Peakflow SP as an integral part of its new IP Guardian service, which is improving the security of Internet communications for its customers.

COLT’s dedicated IP Guardian service continuously routes network traffic through the IP Guardian platform to prevent Internet attack traffic from harming customer networks. COLT offers the service to companies that need constant protection from DDoS attacks. The COLT IP Guardian service is based on Cisco’s XT 5650 Guard and Arbor Networks’ Peakflow SP, which is installed at strategic locations within COLT’s Tier 1 pan-European network to ensure rapid detection and mitigation of any DDoS attack.

COLT has chosen Peakflow SP to proactively detect and trace network-wide anomalies such as DDoS attacks and worms and provide operators with the information they need to mitigate the threats before they affect network traffic.

“Unlike traditional firewalls installed on the customer’s premises, COLT IP Guardian identifies and corrects the problems caused by DDoS attacks from within the COLT network. We are seeking to look at security from within the heart of the network, which is where Arbor Networks fits in,” said Ben Johnson, European Data Product Manager, at COLT. “Our IP Guardian service, which uses Arbor’s Peakflow SP, is a clear demonstration of COLT’s commitment to remain at the forefront of Internet technology.”

“With an estimated 5,000 global DoS attacks per week, it’s a matter of time before each and every organisation feels the impact of a DDoS attack unless service providers offer protection. Globally, businesses are realising that the only way to stop DoS attacks is to work closely with their service providers,” said Arbor Networks’ president Tom Schuster. “COLT is assuring that their customers receive the best protection possible with Arbor’s Peakflow SP, the market-leading DoS protection system.”

Peakflow SP offers significant return on investment in areas critical to a service provider’s profitability: troubleshooting, support, transit costs, service level agreements, and network engineering, and peering analysis, help desk calls during attacks, and report generation.
